Me and Earl and the Dying Girl (2015)

Based on a novel by Jesse Andrews (who also wrote the screenplay), Me and Earl and the Dying Girl was a massive hit at Sundance, although by the time it hit theaters, the hype seemed to have worn off. The actual movie falls somewhere in-between: it's not a masterpiece, but it's funny and pretty entertaining. It is something of a disease-of-the-week movie, but like the better examples of that genre, it doesn't actually focus on the disease. High school senior Greg (Thomas Mann) is a self-described outcast whose only activities are avoiding other people at school, and making funny little parody films with his "co-worker" Earl (RJ Cyler). (Titles include A Sockwork Orange and Eyes Wide Butt, though they are particularly fond of Werner Herzog.) When his mother (Connie Britton) hears that a classmate, Rachel (Olivia Cooke) has cancer, she pushes Greg into paying her a visit. The visits become a regular thing, and soon, Greg allows her to see his films. That leads to the proposition that Greg and Earl make a film just for Rachel, but they have no idea what to make and time is running out. First-time director Alfonso Gomez-Rejon keeps the mood alive and quirky, allowing genuine sadness to seep in at the corners; Mann's narration helps nail down the mood. Jon Bernthal plays a helpful teacher who lets Greg and Earl eat lunch in his office and watch classic films, Molly Shannon is Rachel's mom, swilling a lot of white wine, and Nick Offerman is typically hilarious as Greg's father, who likes to eat strange foods. read more...

Izzy Gets The F*ck Across Town (2018)

There's very little at stake in this spunky little indie comedy, and that's part of its charm; Mackenzie Davis (Blade Runner 2049, Tully) is endearing, and the So. California locations and characters are warmly, lazily quirky. read more...

Hunt for the Wilderpeople (2016)

New Zealand-born actor filmmaker Taika Waititi is a talent to watch; he has the ability to mesh a wonderfully dry sense of humor with a little bit of heart. He received an Oscar nomination for Best Live Action Short in 2005, his coming of age movie Boy (2010) was one of the best of its type I'd seen in some time, his vampire comedy What We Do in the Shadows (2014) was delightfully screwy, and now Hunt for the Wilderpeople (2016) is lovely, funny, and fresh. It plays a little like a cartoon, with its oddball characters traipsing around in the beautiful, unpredictable New Zealand bush, but it never lets go of genuine human feelings. read more...

The Original Kings of Comedy (2000)

The Original Kings of Comedy marks Lee's second attempt at documentary filmmaking (his first was the unforgettable 4 Little Girls from 1997). This time, though, the subject matter offers laughs instead of tears. Covering the most successful touring comedy show of all time, Lee presents the Kings of Comedy: D.L. Hughley, Cedric the Entertainer, Bernie Mac, and emcee Steve Harvey, filmed over a two-day period in Charlotte, North Carolina. Lee shoots the film in a fluid style, giving plenty of coverage to the animated, appreciative audience (directly the opposite of Jonathan Demme's approach on "Stop Making Sense"). All four comics got me giggling, but Hughley was the only one who tickled me till I was out of breath. I can't really say why, though his line about taking a shower with his wife and standing freezing in the back hit home. The film offers more than just yuks, however. As in Lee's best work, the film intelligently discusses race and race relations, though this time through the guise of humor. read more...

Deidra & Laney Rob a Train (2017)

Netflix continues their Sundance spree, snapping up this unusual, amusing little crime film/family story and giving it an exclusive release. In Deidra & Laney Rob a Train (2017), older sister Deidra (Ashleigh Murray) is the top student in her miserable little high school, and while making money selling essays and test answers to fellow students, she prepares to head off to college with a well-earned scholarship. Unfortunately her mother (Danielle Nicolet) suddenly snaps inside a consumer electronics store, smashes a TV, and goes to prison. Deidra finds herself supporting her younger sister Laney (Rachel Crow) and their action figure-loving younger brother (Lance Gray). read more...
