The Acid House (1999)

Adapted by Irvine Welsh (Trainspotting) from his collection of short stories, The Acid House is a good drug/cult movie that assaults our jaded senses with a fuck-all intensity. It's made up of three short stories about the sludge of Scottish society. We meet: Bob, who loses everything he has in one day, meets God in a bar, and gets turned into a housefly; Johnny, who marries a no-good pregnant whore and passively accepts everything that comes to him; and Coco, who drops acid and switches personalities with a newborn baby. The Acid House is not for the easily offended. (Note that because the Scottish accents in this film are so thick, this movie is subtitled.) read more...

Wild and Weird: The Alloy Orchestra Plays 14 Fascinating and Innovative Films - 1902-1965 (2011)

Short films never get much love, at least compared to features, and so it's great to see this truly "wild" collection of fourteen essential, mostly silent-era films from all over the map. Better still, the collection comes from Flicker Alley, a company that has established itself as a leader in the restoration and redistribution of films from that period, and so the quality is superb. And for the icing on the cake, the Alloy Orchestra has provided new musical scores for each film. Many viewers may have been lucky enough to see the Alloy perform live music for silent-era films, but if not, you can hear their music on several DVDs: Kino's recent, restored Metropolis, certain releases of Man with the Movie Camera (1928), and Image's double-feature DVD of Keaton's The General (1927) and Steamboat Bill Jr. (1928). read more...

Straight to Hell (1987)

When Alex Cox's Straight to Hell opened in 1987, viewers may have expected something along the lines of Cox's previous features, Repo Man (1984) and Sid and Nancy (1986). Instead they were treated with a deliberately weird, nonsensical modern-day Western; most people turned up their noses, or ignored it altogether. read more...

Being John Malkovich (1999)

Being John Malkovich is wonderful and inspired weirdness. It's the feature directorial debut of Spike Jonze, who directed such classic music videos as the Beastie Boys' "Sabotage" and Bjork's "It's Oh So Quiet" and appeared in the recent Three Kings. Being John Malkovich shows that Jonze has got scrappy talent to burn, pacing this weird film well and styling it with a grimy look, sharp performances, and clearly shot action. read more...

A Glimpse Inside the Mind of Charles Swan III (2013)

But I like this movie, and I know I may be the only one. The kinds of movies I like least are the ones that do not try at all, the ones that are factory-produced, the ones that attempt to cash in on the latest trends, and the ones that rely more on marketing and hype than on actual filmmaking. A Glimpse Inside the Mind of Charles Swan III is a small movie that actually tried something. It tried something personal, and whether or not it succeeds, it's a movie that came from human hands, flaws and all. read more...
