Ant-Man (2015)

Frankly, the superhero movies are getting overwhelming at this point, with Marvel cranking out more celluloid than James Franco ever could. Everything is interlinked, with everything teasing everything else, and there are endless blogs, trailers, and merchandise, and tons of hype, with anxious, angry fanboys ready to jump on anyone exuding the slightest whiff of criticism. The movies are getting bigger, more complex, and more exhausting; they're beginning to feel more like an obligation than fun. Except, thankfully, here comes Ant-Man, bringing all the surprise and joy we got when we wandered into the first Iron Man or Guardians of the Galaxy. And fun! Yes, fun. read more...

The Incredibles (2004)

Of late, animated family films have begun to lose their luster. Unable to understand what appeals to today's children, studios pump them up with toilet jokes and pop culture references, machine-gunned at a conveyor belt pace (see Shark Tale). Worse, the studios are blaming their failure on old-fashioned musical numbers and hand-drawn animation without bothering to notice the enduring success of films like Beauty and the Beast and Spirited Away. Fortunately, certain animators still have a sense of pride. Brad Bird, who directed one of the best early "Simpsons" episodes (Krusty Gets Busted) as well as the extraordinary 1999 feature film The Iron Giant, returns with The Incredibles, a film so miraculous and so far above its competitors that the Academy Award for Animated Feature Film is no longer a contest. read more...

The Powerpuff Girls Movie (2002)

Craig McCracken's amazing Cartoon Network series ran from 1998 to 2005 (and returned in 2013). For this terrific feature-length movie, the creative team chose to tell the origin story, dealing with the problems of the girls adapting to life in Townsville with their super-powers, and learning about the basics of life (such as the game of tag). Villain Mojo mojo (voiced by Roger Jackson) tries to fool them into do his evil bidding. read more...
