[email protected] (2007)

In the wonderful new documentary Young @ Heart, a group of seventy, eighty and ninety-year olds get together and perform songs by Sonic Youth, Coldplay, James Brown, the Clash, David Bowie, the Ramones and other contemporary bands. It sounds dubious and cutesy, but within minutes it reveals itself as the real thing and doubt gives way to unbridled enthusiasm. It's the type of film that sometimes becomes a word-of-mouth hit, although converts won't want to talk too much about what happens; as you may guess, some of the singers don't have long to live and one or two of them don't make it to the end of the film. Several characters become fascinating in their own right, but none more so than troupe director Bob Cilman, who does not pander to his singers because of their age. He's a tough, brutal drill sergeant, but he can open his heart when it matters most. The film's director Stephen Walker adds his own narration and occasionally enters into the film, which somehow makes it feel less like a documentary; Walker is just as caught up in the moment as we are. Walker's wife, the producer Sally George, directed several funny music videos featuring the group, but the film's highlight has to be a truly emotionally overwhelming concert at a prison. (As of today, the group has a following in Europe and has a CD available.) read more...

For the Love of Spock (2016)

Adam Nimoy directed this basic, but very loving tribute to his father Leonard Nimoy, daring to get a little more personal and a little less reverential than an average Star Trek fan might have done. For the Love of Spock is a loving look back at the career of actor Leonard Nimoy, and specifically the impact of his Star Trek character Mr. Spock. It uses all the typical documentary techniques, including many clips from movies and TV, photos, advertising materials, interviews, speaking engagements, and recordings, as well as new interviews; the younger Nimoy began interviewing his father for this film before he died, so there's plenty of fresh material. read more...

Life, Animated (2016)

At age three, Owen Suskind suddenly stopped speaking and retreated into himself. His parents did not know how to reach him, but, miraculously, after obsessively devouring piles of Disney animated features, the autistic Owen began using the dialogue and themes from the movies to communicate. His father, Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Ron Suskind, wrote a book about the experience, and now Oscar-winning filmmaker Roger Ross Williams (Best Documentary Short, Music by Prudence) has brought the story to the screen. read more...

Goodbye Solo (2009)

Goodbye Solo is a film light in plot but generous in spirit. It tells one of those old, familiar Hollywood yarns about the eccentric oddball who takes an uptight outcast under his or her wing and tries to open him or her up. Then they both learn happy lessons about life in balance. Hollywood generally bungles this formula by making the characters too extreme, with no resemblance to life, but here director Ramin Bahrani (Man Push Cart, Chop Shop) makes no such mistake. read more...

Goodbye Christopher Robin (2017)

Although Goodbye Christopher Robin is another awards-season biopic, this one manages to avoid most of the genre trappings by telling a more focused story, a story that's about something, rather than simply someone's "life story." (It's even somewhat kid-friendly.) The movie focuses on writer A.A. (Alan) Milne (Domhnall Gleeson), who comes home from The Great War full of trauma and anxiety. He wishes to write about the horrors of war, and decides to move to the quiet of the country with his wife Daphne (Margot Robbie) and their young son Christopher. He's unable to write for a while, and he broods while Daphne shops and sharply reproaches their nanny, Olive (Kelly Macdonald). Christopher, however (played by many different children at different ages), loves Olive dearly. read more...
