        Apartment 1303 (2007)

According to the video box, this Japanese ghost story comes from author of The Grudge, but I was unable to confirm this. (As far as I could tell the only link is that both movies were shot by cinematographer Tokusho Kikumura.) Apartment 1303 is based on a novel by Kei Oishi, and regardless of comparisons with The Grudge, this movie offers nothing new. A girl moves into a haunted 13th floor apartment and throws herself out the window. Her sister and a curious cop investigate. Tartan released the DVD in late 2007 with a photo gallery and a trailer. A 3D American remake is forthcoming. read more...

          The Ticket (2017)

While nicely filmed and decorated with soft visuals and tones, this otherwise heavy-handed, unappealing message drama tries to get its blunt point across in an awkward, obvious, and discomfiting way. read more...

The 9th Life of Louis Drax (2016)

Sometimes it can be good to think outside the box, but this weird, undefinable mishmash of dark fantasy, disturbing behavior, and child psychology is ultimately more dismaying than it is refreshing. Written by actor Max Minghella (based on a novel by Liz Jensen) and directed by the usually horror-based Alexandre Aja, The 9th Life of Louis Drax moves confidently, as if it seemed to know where it was going, but as pieces come into place, the picture becomes less and less satisfying. read more...
