You Were Never Really Here (2018)

The Scotland-born Lynne Ramsay returns with her fourth feature film in a long 18 years. You Were Never Really Here is no less dark and brutal than her other works, but it's also a welcome film noir for our modern times. Her remarkable debut Ratcatcher (2001) was something of a coming-of-age story set in a garbage-strewn Glasgow. Her even better follow-up Morvern Callar (2002) told the story of a road trip taken by two women in the wake of death. A long time passed before the controversial We Need to Talk About Kevin (2011), a movie I could not get behind because of its uneasy combination of message-mongering and exploitation. read more...

Bring Me the Head of Alfredo Garcia (1974)

Mostly everyone hated this dreamy, dreary Sam Peckinpah film when it opened in 1974, but it has aged very well and has slowly emerged as a classic -- one of the director's best films. Warren Oates stars as an American piano player stuck in rural Mexico. He hears about a large bounty on the head of Alfredo Garcia, a man who impregnated a wealthy landowner's daughter. He hits the road with his girlfriend (Isela Vega), but his trip soon turns into a murderous and nightmarishly personal odyssey. Oates winds up driving around with the head in a burlap bag swarming with flies, and talking to it (referring to it as "Al") as if it were the only soul in the world he can trust. read more...

      As I Lay Dying (2013)

It has been decades since anyone attempted to adapt a William Faulkner novel for the big screen, and certainly As I Lay Dying -- a novel with fifteen different narrators -- was a difficult choice for actor/writer/director and all-around Renaissance man James Franco. Perhaps the easiest thing would have been to make one of those glossy, reverent, literary movies that never sprang to life. What Franco came up with instead with is messy, bizarre, muted, and confusing, but it's also heartfelt and personal. It takes more risks than most movies. read more...

        The Mystery of Oberwald (1981)

Director Michelangelo Antonioni is still best known for his 1960's freak-out movie Blow Up, a colorful suspense story about a photographer who discovers a potential murder in the background of one of his photos. The movie caught on with audiences with its hip look and way-out music by the Yardbirds (featuring Eric Clapton and Jimmy Page) and Herbie Hancock. But Antonioni is considered a world master director in spite of this funky anomaly in his resume. His masterpiece L'avventura (1960) made incredible use of the emptiness of the Cinemascope space as his characters searched an island in vain for a mysteriously vanished girl, and his other films La Notte (1960), L'eclisse (1962), and Red Desert (1964) are equally admired. The last film on radar was his 1970 flop Zabriskie Point, and from there on out, no one paid any attention to him, though his 1975 film The Passenger, starring Jack Nicholson, was another masterpiece. read more...
