    My Brother's Wedding (1983)

Charles Burnett's follow-up to his great Killer of Sheep was squashed before it had a chance to see the light of day. An unfinished print was shown at a film festival and then, after receiving a negative review in the New York Times, it was shelved. In 2007, on the Milestone DVD release of Killer of Sheep, Burnett was finally able to complete his director's cut of My Brother's Wedding. It's a great film, funny and touching and powerful, about a man, Pierce Mundy (Everett Silas), who works with his parents in their dry-cleaning shop. His successful brother Wendell (Monte Easter) is marrying a wealthy woman, Sonia (Gaye Shannon-Burnett), whom Pierce hates; he sees her as constantly boasting of her privilege. Meanwhile, he tries to help his troubled friend Soldier (Ronnie Bell). The major conflict comes when a funeral is scheduled on the same day as the wedding. Burnett's handling of the material is gentle and humane, finding odd, funny, and sad rhythms of life in the material. Sy Richardson, who plays Sonia's father, went on to appear in many films, including Repo Man. read more...

    Shirkers (2018)

Sandi Tan's bittersweet Shirkers is a most extraordinary movie-story, telling the story of three friends in Singapore, Sandi, Jasmine, and Sophie, who decide to make a movie when they're barely out of their teens. They receive "help," from a film teacher called Georges, and the film is completed, but then Georges disappears with all the film and materials, leaving the three young women to contend with their strange loss. Tan's writing and directing is wonderfully assured — she worked as a film critic and published a novel in the years since — and the footage from the unfinished "Shirkers" is boldly colorful and frequently striking. She manages to dig a little under the surface of friendships here, exposing flaws as well as virtues. This is a totally captivating, and surprisingly moving film. read more...

      Three Identical Strangers (2018)

This documentary tells the incredible story of three triplets who were separated at birth and raised by adoptive families, and how they coincidentally found each other again. The reason for their separation provides another wrinkle in the drama, as does the ongoing nature-vs.-nurture argument; the twins undoubtedly have much in common despite never having met during the first 19 years of their lives, but, at the same time, they are very different. Director Tim Wardle does a fine job doling out the story elements, keeping little surprises for every turn, and he provides a satisfying cross-section of interviews, probing into the mystery. The brothers themselves are the center, though, expressing joy and exasperation in their interviews as if they were movie stars. read more...

          A Separation (2011)

Longtime and loyal readers know that I am a fan of Iranian cinema. I saw my first Iranian film, Gabbeh, back in 1997 and I have been seen some 50 of them since then; in a culture of repression and censorship, certain filmmakers have found amazing ways to express personal and poetic visions. I'm always happy when one of these films goes beyond a small circle of cinephiles. For example, the great director Abbas Kiarostami's latest film, Certified Copy, recently won the Best Foreign Language Film award from my group, the San Francisco Film Critic's Circle. (Although, to be fair, it was not made in Iran.) read more...
