    Greyhound (2020)

Tom Hanks adapted a novel by C.S. Forester and wrote a terrific part for himself in Greyhound, a WWII story that debuted July 10, 2020 on Apple TV+. He plays Captain Krause, assigned to protect a convoy of ships carrying supplies and troops from the United States to England. These convoys can be protected from the air when close to the shore, but there's a range in the middle of the ocean — called "The Black Pit" — that is beyond the reach of aircraft, and in that area, the ships are on their own. Of course, a German submarine immediately attacks. The captain is a devoutly religious man who does not rejoice when Germans are killed, and he refuses to either eat or sleep until he has guided his convoy to safety. Playing cat-and-mouse with the subs, Hanks plays the role smart, calm and thoughtful, rather than racing and barking orders. Director Aaron Schneider (Get Low, and an Oscar winner for his short film Two Soldiers) isn't naturally gifted at depicting the action within a confined space, and it's not always clear, but it's also far from a mess; it's serviceable, and compact. Meanwhile, Hanks fills the screenplay with technical, military jargon, and much of it just slips in one ear and out the other. It's good for the cat-and-mouse stuff, but it doesn't allow for very much character development, especially among the rest of the men, most of whom get lost in the shuffle. Stephen Graham is a standout as the ship's lieutenant commander, but Elisabeth Shue has a tiny, almost unnecessary role as the captain's waiting-at-home sweetheart. read more...

      Red Ball Express (1952)

Before establishing himself with his Randolph Scott Westerns, director Budd Boetticher was a solid, competent director of "B" pictures, and Red Ball Express is as brisk and as entertaining as they come. It tells the story of a special convoy of supply trucks that rushed back and forth through Europe to reach General Patton and the Allied troops after D-Day in 1944. The real Express was largely operated by African-Americans (according to Wikipedia), and Boetticher does include some actors of color in his cast — Sidney Poitier has a ferocious early role — but it leans mostly toward white characters. Boetticher reportedly wanted to tell the truth, but the Department of Defense firmly suggested otherwise. read more...

        Best Seller (1987)

Some crime films don't really attempt to be much more than an entertaining "B" movie, which is the case with Best Seller (1987). Brian Dennehy plays a big city cop who, after surviving an armed robbery of the police evidence room, publishes a best-selling crime novel. While struggling to write a follow-up, he's approached by the incredibly charming, snaky Cleve (James Woods). Cleve claims to have been a hired killer for a huge corporate bigwig, and offers to give Dennis all the dirt he needs for new book. Of course, this gets them into no end of trouble. read more...

        Reclaim (2014)

Reclaim is a totally routine movie that tries to combine a message about trafficked children with a lowbrow thriller about loved ones going missing in a foreign country. This fear has been better handled in better movies, but Reclaim requires all its characters to be completely dumb, or at least very slow on the draw (even though the main characters reassure themselves that they're smart). read more...

This enjoyable based-on-a-true-story racing movie runs a little long, but it manages to keep up a good, breezy pace, focusing more on pure entertainment than on trying to be dutifully "important." read more...
