Topper (1937)

Norman Z. McLeod's Topper was widely available to me as a young film buff -- it was always on VHS and laserdisc, and even in a colorized version -- but I never caught up with it until now, in its 2017 VCI Entertainment Blu-ray release. It's about as lightweight as a movie can get, and not exactly tightly-constructed, but still very enjoyable. read more...

Overboard (2018)

Lazy, stupid, and unfunny, this remake of the 1980s screwball comedy seems to have been made without anyone caring at all. Worse, it manages to be insulting to both the characters and to the audience. read more...

Clambake (1967)

It's almost as if Elvis Presley were two guys. It's possible to enjoy his ferocious rock 'n' roll music of the 1950s on one level, and to enjoy the awfulness of the majority of his movies on another. His third movie of 1969, Clambake is indeed awful, but it's amusing and Presley's star power is hard to refute. It starts with Elvis, here as "Scott Hayward," driving through a blue screen, and then stopping at a gas station long enough to get caught up in one of those creaky old "switching places" sitcom plots. read more...

Frankie and Johnny (1966)

Sometimes Elvis Presley's movies are campy fun, but sometimes, as with Frankie and Johnny, they are lazy and dire, barely even able to muster anything ridiculous, let alone anything good. This one is dull from the start, dull all the way through, and dull at the end. There aren't even any decent songs here, no classics, nor anything that's completely laughable (like "Do the Clam"). Elvis did score a top 40 hit from this movie with the title song, but it's nothing I'd want to hear again. read more...

Speechless (1994)

Possibly, but not necessarily based on the real-life relationship between liberal political consultant James Carville and conservative commentator Mary Matalin, the movie Speechless (1994) eventually dissipates anything even closely resembling real life. It's a shame because Michael Keaton and Geena Davis could have been at their charming best here, playing rival political speechwriters who fall in love during a New Mexico senatorial race. But the movie betrays them with so many dumb sitcom moments and idiotic misunderstandings that the actors barely know how to react. One situation depends on the science fiction idea that Davis's character is unable to wake Keaton's character from a deep slumber, even after dropping him on the floor. Despite not working as a romance or a comedy, the even bigger shame is that this doesn't even try to be a political satire. Christopher Reeve plays the third wheel in the romantic triangle, a thankless role as a self-obsessed TV reporter (it was one of his final roles before his debilitating accident). The only good thing about Speechless is the poster, which features the instantly-recognizable lips of Keaton and Davis, presumably in pre-kiss mode. Ron Underwood directed, from a screenplay by Robert King. Olive Films released it on Blu-ray in 2016. read more...
