Kingpin (1996)

This follow-up to the Farrelly brothers's smash hit Dumb and Dumber was a surprise flop, but it later became a cult classic. I'm kind of in the middle on it; it didn't deserve to flop, but it's also not a film I need to see again and again. Like many Farrelly movies, it's too long and its balance of broad, vulgar humor and goopy pathos is a little awkward. But it's not hard to love Roy Munson (Woody Harrelson), a would-be champion bowler whose hand is mangled thanks to an act of jealousy by showoff Ernie McCracken (Bill Murray). Years later, Roy gets a second chance when he discovers the Amish Ishmael Boorg (Randy Quaid), with God-given bowling talent. Claudia (Vanessa Angel) escapes an abusive relationship and joins them. Murray is especially brilliant (as usual) playing a loathsome bad guy, and there are definitely a few laughs that make Kingpin worth seeing. Cameos include the great Red Sox/Yankees pitcher Roger Clemens, the singer Jonathan Richman, and the band Urge Overkill. Chris Elliott also appears. read more...

Klaus (2019)

Origin-of-Santa-Claus movies and shows are nothing new, but the animated feature Klaus feels fresh and smart, providing oddly logical ideas for the beginnings of certain Christmas traditions. It has a great look — hand-drawn characters and backdrops with computer-generated texturing and lighting — and strong voice performances. Wealthy, spoiled Jesper (voiced by Jason Schwartzman) is punished by his father, and sent to be the postmaster of a remote, frozen island, where longtime feuds between the residents don't result in much need for mail. He meets old toymaker Klaus (voiced by J.K. Simmons), and gets an idea: to meet his quota, and perhaps return to his old life, Jesper encourages the children to write letters to Klaus, asking for toys. The movie sadly relies on some overly familiar plot twists as it goes along, but finally wins the day with its cheerful spirit. Sergio Pablos, who wrote the stories for Despicable Me and Smallfoot, makes his directing debut. read more...

Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure (1989)

Rufus (George Carlin), a man from the future, gives a phone booth time machine to couple of brain-dead Sam Dimas, California rockers in Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure. Bill (Alex Winter) and Ted (Keanu Reeves) travel all over history, collecting major figures for their high school report, including Napoleon (Terry Camilleri), Joan of Arc (Jane Wiedlin) and Billy the Kid (Dan Shor). Reeves and Winter make the characters stupidly likable and popularized all kinds of surf-speak, like "dude," "bogus," "whoa," and many more. read more...
