Independence Day (1996)

It's not so much trying to figure out which movies Emmerich stole his ideas, but rather keeping track of how many. Here's a partial list: all three Star Wars movies, Star Trek (the movies and the TV show), Dr. Strangelove, 2001, Alien and Aliens, War of the Worlds, Invaders from Mars, Invasion of the Body Snatchers, The Day the Earth Stood Still, all 1970's disaster movies, such as Earthquake, The Towering Inferno and Meteor, and, to some extent, "The X-Files." It even rips a song from Pulp Fiction. read more...

Kingsman: The Golden Circle (2017)

This improved sequel to Kingsman: The Secret Service contains just as much slick, inventive, crazy action and is just as much fun. It's also just as violent, but also shows far more empathy toward human loss. read more...

Lara Croft: Tomb Raider (2001)

Lara Croft: Tomb Raider understands the best part of the adventure movie. Those scenes in which the heroes gather in some poorly-lit laboratory or dusty library to piece together the facts on some ancient artifact and figure out where their adventure takes them next. The best of these scenes comes in Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981) when Indiana Jones explains the power of the Lost Ark with the help of a musty old book. read more...

Transformers: Age of Extinction (2014)

Michael Bay has done it again. He has made an absolutely horrible Transformers movie, much the same as the three previous horrible Transformers movies -- Transformers (2007), Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen (2009), and Transformers: Dark of the Moon (2011) -- except that he has made it bigger, louder, and -- heaven help us -- much longer. He has had too much encouragement; why try anything different when the series has so far grossed almost $3 billion worldwide? read more...

The Lost World: Jurassic Park (1997)

On paper, this sequel looks more like a business decision than a genuine attempt at a movie. In 1993, Steven Spielberg had a giant hit with Jurassic Park, and followed it up with Schindler's List. It only makes sense that he would try to duplicate that one-two punch, and he spent four years setting it up again: a summer release of The Lost World: Jurassic Park and a winter release of Amistad. Author Michael Crichton even wrote a book, published in 1995, to base it on. The actual movie isn't quite as soulless as it could have been, however, and even if it does go through the motions, it's skillfully made and has some memorable sequences, best of all being a cliffhanger sequence in an RV with a cracking windshield. It was a clever investment, and the movie was a hit. read more...
