Shaun the Sheep Movie (2015)

Aardman's Shaun the Sheep Movie is a miraculous thing. It's an animated movie that embraces true physical humor, as the likes of Charlie Chaplin and Buster Keaton once did. It is, in essence, a silent movie, with no spoken words. Characters grunt and mumble and make verbal noises, and these noises often indicate intent or emotion, and there are a few pop songs, but not one actual word is spoken. read more...

Paddington (2015)

First appearing in 1958, Paddington Bear is a creature of kindness and politeness, far from the wisecracking, marketable children's characters of today. Yet, somehow the new Paddington movie seems modern while at the same time holding firmly to its quaint, lovely ideals. Ben Whishaw voices the CGI bear, who is raised in darkest Peru under the indirect influence of an English explorer; he loves marmalade. He travels to London and finds a place to stay with the Browns (Hugh Bonneville and a delightful Sally Hawkins) and their children, Judy and Jonathan. Villains can often kill the mood in a children's film, but here it's Nicole Kidman as a driven taxidermist, and she makes the role worthwhile. Director and co-writer Paul King includes a few big slapstick moments, but they arise naturally out of the character's unfamiliarity with the civilized world, and only one brief burp/fart joke enters the proceedings. Perhaps the real appeal of this movie is that good manners never go out of style. read more...

The Grinch (2018)

This second big-screen re-do of Dr. Seuss's 1957 kids' book and Chuck Jones's1966 How the Grinch Stole Christmas! TV special is a little lightweight, but it's a drastic improvement over the gaudy, vulgar 2000 live-action movie by Ron Howard. To tell the truth, this Grinch's brevity and bright, bold colors may be just the kind of thing to relax and get lost in this holiday season. The Grinch has been softened a little so that he's not just mean for mean's sake; now he's mean because he's actually sad. This may sound silly, but it actually makes more sense, and the transformation from naughty to nice is more satisfying. (Before, the mean Grinch was so much more fun than the nice one.) Plus, now we don't have to endure the character being so darn nasty to his dog, Max. read more...

Big (1988)

Tom Hanks gave his first great performance as Josh, a kid who falls under a spell and wakes up in a grown man's body, with none of the knowledge or experience that comes with it. Not unlike in Being There, his naïveté manages to charm everyone, including potential love interest Elizabeth Perkins. To this day, the movie contains many memorable lines and moments including the giant keyboard, the baby corn, and "I get to be on top!" Along with Hanks and a good script by Gary Ross and Anne Spielberg, director Penny Marshall somehow managed to elevate Big (1988) well past a normal, brain-dead, high-concept summer blockbuster and into something genuinely affecting. Her achievement is all the more notable when you consider that three other "age switching" movies came out that same year (Like Father, Like Son, 18 Again!, and Vice Versa). read more...

Mary Poppins (1964)

At her most startlingly beautiful here, Julie Andrews does not play the chipper, loving nanny people might expect or remember. She carefully layers a distantly dangerous and even spooky side to her character, similar to Gene Wilder's Willy Wonka role five years later. The story is about super-nanny Mary Poppins (Andrews), who turns up to take care of a young girl and her younger brother in turn-of-the-century England. read more...
