Extract (2009)

Mike Judge packs a lot of jokes and very little movie into his new Extract. The movie has a kind of lazy, cruddy look -- which may or may not have been on purpose -- and the screenplay alternates between wanting a plot and wanting to just wallow in the latest laugh. An 11th hour character, a sleazy lawyer who advertises on park benches, could have livened up the party, but instead he falls flat. Jason Bateman stars Joel, a chemist who started his own food extract company and oversees production. Joel works too much and his sex life with his wife, Suzie (Kristen Wiig), is on the rocks. read more...

Why Him? (2016)

If the new Christmas season comedy Why Him? looks familiar, perhaps it will help to remember that filmmaker John Hamburg co-wrote the extremely popular garbage Meet the Parents and its sequels, and directed the moderately popular garbage Along Came Polly. read more...

Friday After Next (2002)

In 1987, Run-DMC busted a rhyme with "Christmas in Hollis," one of the first visions of Christmas in the 'hood: "It's Christmastime in Hollis, Queens; Mom's cooking chicken and collard greens." Fifteen years later, writer/actor/rapper Ice Cube follows suit 15 with the first Christmas movie set in the 'hood. Friday After Next marks the third film in Cube's laid-back Friday series. And like National Lampoon's Vacation series, this film probably will become a new holiday favorite, even though it's not quite as funny as the first one. (Still, I'm already looking forward to seeing Friday After Next on video next Christmas.) read more...

Going in Style (2017)

Zach Braff directs this remake of a 1978 movie that starred George Burns, Art Carney, and Lee Strasberg; that movie featured two Oscar-winners and one nominee, but this one has three Oscar-winners. Take that! The updated version also grapples briefly with social issues such as the ill-treatment of seniors in America, the immoral behavior of financial institutions, and being an organ donor. Michael Caine stars as Joe Harding, whose mortgage has been drastically raised at the same time as his pension has been cut. While at the bank, a trio of robbers stages a dazzling robbery and escapes unscathed. Hanging out with his two pals, Willie (Morgan Freeman) and Albert (Alan Arkin) and complaining about their lack of money, they decide to rob a bank themselves. They enlist veteran criminal Jesus (John Ortiz) to help. read more...

Mean Girls (2004)

Tina Fey wrote the clever screenplay for Mean Girls (2004), taking a realistic look at just how vicious high school girls could possibly be to each other (many saw it as an update of Heathers, from 1989). It succeeds in straddling a line between cynicism and genuine care, and it gets pretty dark even if Fey reportedly had to soften her original script to get the PG-13 rating. Lindsay Lohan stars, before being ground up into tabloid headline fodder, as Cady, who returns with her parents to the U.S. after being raised in Africa. She immediately tangles with three popular, and dangerous "mean girls" (Rachel McAdams, Lacey Chabert, and Amanda Seyfried). One scene takes place at the winter talent show as the girls perform "Jingle Bell Rock" in sexy Santa outfits. read more...
