A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors (1987)

I saw this in the theater with a group of high school friends, and it was great fun. Somehow A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors has always been just a bit more enjoyable than the typical horror sequel. Maybe it's because of the adorable young Patricia Arquette, or the youngish Laurence Fishburne. Or maybe it's because of "B" movie great John Saxon, or the return of the perpetually sleepy Heather Langenkamp, and the great, campy Robert Englund from the first movie. Or maybe it's because Wes Craven himself helped write the screenplay, alongside Frank Darabont, who would go on to become a highly acclaimed director himself. Or maybe it's because of the unique killing scenes, such as the huge Freddy Krueger snake, or the unforgettable TV scene ("It's your big break in TV!"). Maybe it's even because of the anthemic, cheesy metal theme song, "Dream Warriors" by Dokken. Anyway you slice it (no pun intended) this is a must-see for anyone who has a soft-spot for 1980s horror movies. read more...

Curse of Chucky (2013)

I know it's hard to believe, but this sixth movie in the Child's Play/Chucky slasher series is actually surprisingly well made. (It has an 81% on Rotten Tomatoes.) Don Mancini, who wrote the screenplay for the original Child's Play (1988), takes on directing duties and brings the series back to its roots. Brad Dourif returns as the voice of the killer doll, Chucky, as well as appearing as a human in flashbacks (he used black magic to transfer his soul to the doll). Dourif's daughter Fiona takes the lead as the wheelchair-bound Nica; Chucky kills Nica's mom, bringing Nica's no-good sister (Danielle Bisutti) and her family around, hoping to potentially sell the huge family house that Nica lives in. read more...

Texas Chainsaw 3D (2013)

Texas Chainsaw 3D begins with some good ideas, such as following immediately on the trail of the original classic, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974), and introducing the main character as Leatherface's cousin. The movie touches slightly on the idea of families looking out for one another, which makes for an interesting dynamic toward the end. Unfortunately, the bulk of the movie is just another slasher, albeit a non-supernatural one. read more...

A Slit-Mouthed Woman (2007)

Koji Shiraishi's primal and perverse new film ventures into precarious places. Based on an actual urban legend, the slit-mouthed woman wears a long coat and a surgical mask to cover up her sliced-open mouth, and kidnaps children. In Shiraishi's film, she appears supernaturally by inhabiting people's bodies (they cough just before the beastie appears). A teacher, Ms. Yamashita (Eriko Sato), who has been forbidden to see her child due to past physical abuse, sees one of her students kidnapped and tries to solve the case. The film feels rushed and a bit of a mess, but its effective, low-tech imagery and sound effects more than make up for the lack of slick professionalism. The title was changed to Carved: The Slit-Mouthed Woman for its video release. Tartan's DVD comes with a making-of featurette, cast interviews, a trailer, TV spots and optional subtitles. read more...

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 (1986)

In the mid-1980s, Tobe Hooper signed a three-picture deal with Canon to make this, Lifeforce and Invaders from Mars, though I'm not exactly sure which ones Hooper wanted to make and which ones Canon wanted him to make. I think Hooper cultists would cast a vote for Lifeforce as the best of the three, but this sequel to Hooper's masterpiece isn't bad either. read more...
