    Rush (2013)

Working with the great screenwriter Peter Morgan, director Ron Howard creates best and grittiest movie since their Frost/Nixon (2008), or even Apollo 13 (1995). Perhaps Howard was inspired by his earliest days as a filmmaker, working for "B" movie maven Roger Corman and making another car-centric movie, Grand Theft Auto (1977). In any case, Howard seems recharged, delving into complex and multi-dimensional characters. read more...

    Anonymous (2011)

The first thing anyone will ask or notice about Anonymous is that it's a movie about Shakespeare, directed by that untalented veteran of loud disaster movies (Independence Day, The Day After Tomorrow, etc.), Roland Emmerich. read more...

      The Man from Laramie (1955)

The fifth of Anthony Mann's five Westerns with Jimmy Stewart (and the last of their eight movies together), The Man from Laramie looks more and more like the best of the lot. (Hard to pick, since they're all exceptional.) Mann incorporates all his usual expertise at combining real landscapes with the emotional conflict of his characters, but this time it includes a more intricate plot, and in fact, a kind of murder mystery. (It recalls his earlier, psychological Western, The Furies.) read more...

        Frost/Nixon (2008)

Very few filmmakers irritate me more than Ron Howard. I hated, hated most of his films of the past decade, which ranged from vulgar, blundering commercialism to vulgar, blundering self-important Oscar-bait. We should all rue the day that he morphed from a lightweight entertainer to an "important artist." To date, his only really good film is Apollo 13 (1995), which somehow balanced a documentary-like flow with effortless suspense. Magically, the new Frost/Nixon does the same; it's Howard's second really good film. read more...

          Invictus (2009)

Clint Eastwood's latest film includes a commanding portrait of Nelson Mandela, after his release from prison in 1990 and during his first few years as President of South Africa. Eastwood avoids the usual biopic trappings by focusing only on a few crucial years and events, namely the rugby World Cup of 1995. Unfortunately, in order to totally succeed, the film must completely take the temperature of the entire nation at the time, including all races and creeds. Since no film could possibly accomplish that, Invictus winds up as merely a very good inspirational sports story. read more...
