    The Halliday Brand (1957)

Joseph H. Lewis was, more often than not, a "B" movie maker. But his intelligence, skill, and instinct were quite above average. Just as he made Gun Crazy (1949) into a psychosexual masterpiece, he likewise makes The Halliday Brand into something more than a workaday Western. Here there are no good guys or bad guys, just a horrible, quasi-Oedipal, lifelong feud between a hard-headed father and a forward-thinking son. read more...

      Kiss Tomorrow Goodbye (1950)

Following White Heat (1949), which was one of James Cagney's signature roles, he took on another gangster pic with Kiss Tomorrow Goodbye. But whereas White Heat director Raoul Walsh was one of the top action directors in Hollywood, Kiss Tomorrow Goodbye director Gordon Douglas was more of a maker of ramshackle "B" movies (his best-known, best-loved credit is still the giant ant movie, Them!). And so, in essence, just about everyone who ever saw Kiss Tomorrow Goodbye responded the same: it's no White Heat. True, but it's still a cool movie. read more...

      To Die For (1995)

Gus Van Sant directed this sharp black comedy about our obsession with television and celebrity culture. Nicole Kidman stars in perhaps her first great role as a wannabe small-time weather anchorwoman who kills her husband, Larry (Matt Dillon), and gets away with it because of her awesome television presence. She seduces teen Jimmy (Joaquin Phoenix) and pulls in his friends (Casey Affleck and Alison Folland) to be her accomplices. read more...

Sicario: Day of the Soldado (2018)

Sicario: Day of the Soldado — the follow-up to 2015's Sicario — is rather unexpected for a sequel. It's a pessimistic, grownup film, and not exactly pop entertainment. read more...

      Born to Kill (1947)

Robert Wise's Born to Kill is a true film noir. Many other films get lumped into this genre, but an honest-to-goodness film noir is marked by a hero who, influenced either by wealth or by sex, allows himself to be drawn into the underworld, never to return. If a movie has a happy ending, it's not the real thing. read more...
