        A Separation (2011)

Longtime and loyal readers know that I am a fan of Iranian cinema. I saw my first Iranian film, Gabbeh, back in 1997 and I have been seen some 50 of them since then; in a culture of repression and censorship, certain filmmakers have found amazing ways to express personal and poetic visions. Foxtrot (2018)

Of the batch of 2017 "official Oscar submissions" from various countries — usually a dreary, self-important lot — I can safely say that I liked Samuel Maoz's Foxtrot, from Israel, best. It did not receive a nomination, of course, because it's far edgier, more artistic, and more interesting than the stuff that usually wins. read more...

John Cassavetes went into Love Streams knowing he was dying, and while it's as difficult and as disturbing as the rest of his body of work, it also comes to light as an oddly tender film, and open-hearted work. read more...
