    Serenade for Haiti (2017)

All the way back in 2000, I fell in love with a movie called Night Waltz: The Music of Paul Bowles and went to meet with its maker, a young director by the name of Owsley Brown, who struck me with his extraordinary intelligence and empathy. It has been a long time since I saw another of Brown's movies, and here it is: Serenade for Haiti, which is every bit as sad and beautiful as its predecessor. read more...

Hale County This Morning, This Evening (2018)

RaMell Ross's Hale County This Morning, This Evening could have been one of those things that gets shot by your friend that always has his camera on, and then cobbled together on iMovie, but instead it's a deeply poetic, lyrical film that understands the beauty and importance of small moments of seeming nothingness. The movie ostensibly focuses on Daniel, who goes to college to play basketball, and Quincy, who winds up having children, but the film barely provides any biographical details or soul-searching moments. It simply watches them do what they do. They sometimes speak to, or acknowledge the camera, but mostly not. It's almost like a Frederick Wiseman film, but looser, taking time out for a time-lapse shot of cows in a field or stars at night. The result is less a complete portrait of people or a place than it is a meditation, or an impression, and it's a highly satisfying one. It's fitting that the great Thai filmmaker Apichatpong Weerasethakul served as "creative advisor," as Hale County This Morning, This Evening is the kind of experimental non-fiction work that Weerasethakul's debut feature Mysterious Object at Noon was. Danny Glover was an executive producer. The film was nominated for an Oscar for Best Documentary Feature. read more...

    Paris, Texas (1984)

The three major figures of the German New Wave of the 1960s and 1970s took three completely divergent paths. Rainer Werner Fassbinder remained determinedly local and burned out quickly, dying at the age of 37 after pumping out more than 40 films in 15 years. Werner Herzog became interested in issues of man versus nature, and often ventured out into uncomfortable sections of the world. And Wim Wenders became fascinated by America, and especially the open road that connected all the various people and places within. A good number of his movies deal with characters that travel from one place to another, especially the three-hour Kings of the Road (1976), which is sadly absent from DVD. Happily, his best-known and best-loved road movie Paris, Texas (1984) has just been re-issued in a beautiful Criterion Collection edition, available on both DVD and Blu-Ray. read more...

      The Deserted Station (2002)

The two leaders of Iranian film, Abbas Kiarostami and Mohsen Makhmalbaf, have spent a good deal of their time training and helping young filmmakers get started. Makhmalbaf has his own film school, and his wife and daughter have released extraordinary films under his tutelage. Kiarostami has helped out new filmmakers like Jafar Panahi by contributing story ideas and taking "story" credit on films like The White Balloon and the recent Crimson Gold. read more...

        Cameraperson (2016)

This wonderful documentary is essentially a collection of clips from the career of Kirsten Johnson, a cinematographer on many noted documentaries of the past couple of decades. The idea is that the movie might form some kind of a picture of Johnson's personality, and it does just that; she comes across as curious, compassionate, and sometimes a little adorably blindsided. (I fell in love with the movie during a roadside shot wherein she unexpectedly captures a bolt of lightning, gasps, and then, a few moments later, sneezes and jolts her shot.) Some of the documentaries are easy to identify, mainly when folks like Michael Moore or Jacques Derrida turn up, but otherwise, the clips are unidentified. I was regularly asking myself about the role of director; Johnson is the "director" of this film, even though the footage was shot under the guidance of many other directors (she works frequently for the Oscar-nominated Kirby Dick). At the same time, some of the clips show Johnson interviewing her own family members. On the whole, the movie gives viewers a chance to sit back and ponder questions and thoughts about the nature of being human and our relationship with the world. read more...
