Possession (1981)

Surely one of the most deranged, mind-bogglingly bizarre horror movies ever made, Andrzej Zulawski cult classic Possession (1981) is a hard movie to find, particularly in its uncut, 123-minute version. So there's this husband, Mark (Sam Neill) and wife, Anna (Isabelle Adjani) who fight. The wife disappears. She might be having an affair. The husband finds that their son's teacher (also played by Adjani) is a dead ringer for his wife. A private detective is hired. A second apartment is discovered, and inside it is... well... a kind of... thing. Zulawski, who passed away in 2016 at the age of 75, directs with a deceptive quality; things seem normal until they suddenly don't. It's a lurching feeling, like a waking hallucination. Although barely anyone knew quite what to make of it when it was first shown, Adjani at least won Best Actress at the Cannes Film Festival. read more...

The Ornithologist (2017)

The Portuguese director João Pedro Rodrigues (O Fantasma, Two Drifters, To Die Like a Man) is usually puzzling, and polarizing. I tend to like his films, but he tends to alienate many critics. He's openly gay but doesn't show gay themes in a soft or coddling way. He can be absurd and surreal, but not necessarily at the same time. His new The Ornithologist feels like it tiptoes around territory previously explored by David Lynch, Andrei Tarkovsky, and Alejandro Jodorowsky, and it had me for most of its running time, but as it reaches the final ten or so minutes, it more or less dives off a cliff. It lost me. read more...

Luz (2019)

Tilman Singer's Luz, from Germany, is one of the stranger horror movies in recent years, more of an impression than an experience, easier to watch than to describe. A young woman cab driver named Luz (Luana Velis) walks into a police station and starts saying strange things. Meanwhile, a man in a bar, Dr. Rossini (Jan Blurhardt) attracts the attention of a woman, Nora (Julia Riedler), who discovers that he's a psychotherapist, tells him weird stories and buys him odd-looking drinks. Then the man, disoriented, receives a page and goes to work. Luz is in a large room where a woman sits at a desk and a man sits in a recording booth. The doctor arranges a few chairs and hypnotizes Luz, and then she re-creates (I think) the events of earlier in the evening while driving her cab. (To be honest, Luz reminded me a little of Winona Ryder's "Corky" from Jim Jarmusch's Night on Earth.) Then it gets really bizarre. Singer shoots on 16mm and allows bits of dust and wear to show on his images, and his wide, chilly staging and rhythms are meant to recall some of the edgier, moodier horror movies of the 1970s, likely those by David Cronenberg and Dario Argento, rather than any jump-scares or blood or screaming. The 70-minute running time is exactly right, bringing it closer to the realm of experimental horror than anything mainstream. If something like Berberian Sound Studio is more your cup of tea than, say, Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark, then give Luz a whirl. read more...

Enemy (2014)

The Oscar-nominated Canadian filmmaker Denis Villeneuve (Incendies) continues his collaboration with actor Jake Gyllenhaal, following last year's Prisoners. The result here is much tighter but far less realistic. Indeed, Enemy could easily be described as surreal. It's a mystery story, with mystery elements, but the movie does not provide much in the way of answers. It's more like a David Lynch film, with clues, emotions, images, ideas, and sensations coming together for one unique experience, with a bizarre, unforgettable ending. read more...
