Tom and Jerry: The Gene Deitch Collection (2015)

In the early 1960s, cartoons made for theatrical release were reaching the end of their lifespan. Animators William Hanna and Joseph Barbera, who had made a huge success out of the Tom & Jerry cartoons at MGM, had moved on, and MGM made the very strange decision to hire American animator Gene Deitch to take over the series. Deitch was located in the former Czechoslovakia, and had a crew of animators who had never seen a Tom & Jerry short. What's more, his budgets were much smaller than Tom & Jerry had previously enjoyed. Deitch's cartoons came out looking very different than what fans were used to, and to this day their very existence is met with rage from cartoon fans. But in 2015, Warner Home Video released a remastered collection of all 13 of Deitch's shorts, and I found that if you can shift your expectations just a bit, there's something to love about these misfit 'toons. read more...

Scooby-Doo! Moon Monster Madness (2015)

The direct-to-video animated feature Scooby-Doo! Moon Monster Madness has some interesting ideas. For one, it contains a monster that can withstand the cold vacuum of space, and for another, it contains a strange fantasy sequence with a different style of animation, depicting each of the mystery solvers battling imaginary aliens. But aside from that, the movie isn't very inventive or streamlined. It also contains a robot character that wants to be a comedian; its jokes continually fall flat and it uses a built-in "cheering" section to make himself feel better. The movie feels like that. read more...

Looney Tunes: Musical Masterpieces (2015)

Growing up and heading out into the world, I realized that I had learned some of the world's great pieces of music from the Looney Tunes cartoons. (There was a reason they were called "Tunes.") Indeed, even when they featured original music (by the incomparable Carl Stalling), these cartoons were at their most creative when they focused on music as a theme or subject (many of these shorts, aside from singing, relied on pure visuals to tell their stories). So this collection of 18 music-related cartoons was a brilliant idea, and it showcases some of the finest work the Warner team ever did. read more...

Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb (2014)

Made from the "kids-won't-care-how-badly-we-slapped-this-thing-together" school of filmmaking, Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb is the third in a series moneymakers based on funny actors and lots of visual effects. The plots are secondary, like this one: the magic tablet begins to lose its power, so security guard Larry (Ben Stiller), his son (Skyler Gisondo), and a bunch of the exhibits go to London to speak to Merenkahre (Ben Kingsley). There, Sir Lancelot (Dan Stevens) gives them plenty of trouble. Director Shawn Levy and his army of writers bring up ideas, and let them drop. Clumsy cutting ruins many of the jokes, and the action sequences are lifeless. Owen Wilson's lackadaisical line readings are worth a giggle or two, though. And the final goodbye as Theodore Roosevelt (the late Robin Williams) returns to wax is bittersweet, but not because of anything the movie has done. It's the final live-action film for Williams, as well as for Mickey Rooney, who appears in one scene. read more...
