Ash vs Evil Dead: The Complete Third Season (2018)

With this 2018 season, Ash vs Evil Dead (see reviews of Season One and Season Two) continues to find its gleeful, inventive balance between gore (a deadite is killed by having its head locked in a paint-shaking machine) and zany humor (Ash tastes a Pop Tart and says, "Oh my God! These are much better toasted!"). But rather than falling back on references to the old films, though they are here, this season gets a little more touchy and relies more on the "family" aspect between the characters, Ash (Bruce Campbell), Pablo (Ray Santiago), and Kelly (Dana DeLorenzo). Yet it works like gangbusters, since it's carefully intertwined with the aforementioned horror and comedy. read more...

Waxwork (1988)

Zach Galligan (Gremlins) stars as rich kid Mark, who is invited along with his friends to a weird new wax museum at midnight. It's run by a creepy fellow (David Warner) who seems to be able to suddenly appear in various places. Each of the exhibits depicts some kind of horror, and whenever one of the teens steps over the rope (why would they do this?) they are magically transported to that time and place. One character clashes with a werewolf (John Rhys-Davies), another with a vampire, and another with zombies. Some of the teens remain trapped in their exhibits and Mark and the police try to figure out what's going on before the world comes to an end (or something). read more...

Tragedy Girls (2017)

Though it owes a great deal to Heathers and several, newer social media-obsessed movies, this black comedy still has enough fresh venom and crazy cleverness to make it a fresh satirical entertainment. read more...

Dead Shack (2018)

This spirited, silly horror movie isn't particularly fresh or scary, but it has enough charm to be worthy of a viewing by genre fans. Shy, awkward Jason (Matthew Nelson-Mahood) is invited by his best friend, the abrasive, insulting twit Colin (Gabriel LaBelle) to join Colin's family on a little vacation in a cabin in the woods. Jason has a little crush on Colin's acerbic sister, Summer (Lizzie Boys), and his attempts to be kind to her are met with jokes. Colin and Summer's father Roger (Donavon Stinson, quite funny) is a middle-aged goofball who only wants to get drunk with his cute new girlfriend, Lisa (Valeria Tian). The three teens go exploring and come upon another cabin, where the sexy neighbor (Lauren Holly) — usually clad in tight-fitting black armor — takes care of zombies by luring men there, drugging them and turning them into zombie food. Aside from the three teens constantly blabbing and insulting each other, the rest of the story involves the usual investigating, screaming, gearing up, zombie-fighting, and splatters of gore, though certainly with a few fun surprises and genuine laughs. read more...

Waxwork II: Lost in Time (1992)

Waxwork II: Lost in Time is even sillier, more creative, and more elaborate than its predecessor, while at the same time making even less sense. It works better as a guilty pleasure, an artifact of a lost time, than it does any kind of well-made classic. It begins right as Waxwork (1988) leaves off. Mark (Zach Galligan) and Sarah (tall, lovely Monika Schnarre, taking over for Deborah Foreman) escape the burning wax museum, but Sarah is attacked by a stray, severed hand and is accused of murdering her stepfather. A recording of Sir Wilfred (Patrick Macnee) tells them about a time-medallion that opens doors to other times (actually alternate universes), where they might find something to help. From there, Mark and Sarah jump into worlds recalling or resembling Frankenstein, Robert Wise's The Haunting, and Alien, before landing in the movie's lengthiest episode, a kind of medieval adventure with magic and swords. At the climactic battle, there are further references to Jack the Ripper, Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde, Dawn of the Dead, Nosferatu, Godzilla, and others. Through it all, the joking, smiling, good-hearted Mark learns to be a warrior. read more...
