Lion (2016)

Lion is middlebrow mediocrity served up by the Weinsteins on a silver platter for awards season. Directed by Garth Davis, a former maker of commercials, Lion begins by asking us to watch nearly an hour of the misery, hardship, and hopelessness of a sweetly adorable young boy (Sunny Pawar); it all has a "isn't this heartbreaking?" tone. Finally, the boy grows into Dev Patel, with a beard and long, flowing hair that cascades over his forehead in moments of emotional distress. Then we spend roughly another 40 minutes as he anguishes over his real parents, and how to find them. These scenes mostly consist of Dev clicking around on Google Earth, pushing pins into a map, and occasionally weeping. Then we get the reunion scene, which — highlighted by Davis's obsessive need to jump-cut every second-and-a-half — does not have the power it should. Nicole Kidman is getting Oscar buzz as the adoptive mom who has the courage to appear un-beautiful onscreen. Rooney Mara co-stars as the hero's girlfriend whose entire state of existence depends on whatever mood he's in. It was adapted from an autobiography, and there are photos at the end to reassure us that this was, indeed, based on a true story. I doubt the true story is as trite as this movie. read more...

The Descendants (2011)

As for me, I loved Sideways, though I was even fonder of Million Dollar Baby, the movie that eventually edged ahead and won the Oscar for Best Picture. (And I liked Before Sunset better than both.) I don't think I look much like Paul Giamatti, and I'm not sure how much I identify with him. But all these qualifiers aside, Payne's new movie, his first in seven years, isn't nearly as good. read more...

Tallulah (2016)

This Netflix original film falls into the old "weepie/women's picture" category, but it stays stubbornly rooted in characters and moments. It never goes over the top into goopy sentimentality, and if any tears are produced, they are earned. Ellen Page stars in a very strong performance as the title character, a crafty homeless waif living in the back of a truck with her boyfriend, Nico (Evan Jonigkeit). They scrounge for food or steal it, and they have been happy, until Nico decides to leave. Tallulah sneaks into a hotel to pick at the food left in the hallway, and is mistaken for a hotel babysitter by the rich, pathetic Carolyn (Tammy Blanchard). read more...

Beautiful Boy (2018)

This movie has a lot of hugging. Expertly acted to be sure, the drug addiction drama Beautiful Boy is also grueling and repetitive; it's so bland and detached that it wobbles between making drug use look sexy and being an after-school special. Timothy Hutton even shows up in one scene as a doctor, explaining and diagraming the scientific facts about the horrors of crystal meth use. read more...

Room (2015)

I didn't really want to see Room and I can't say I'm entirely glad I did, but I will admit that if you're among those that do want to see it, it does its job effectively. (It's a kind of feel-good downer, like Precious.) Written by Emma Donoghue, who adapted her own novel, Room tells the story of a woman (Brie Larson) who has been taken prisoner and kept in a room, a shed, in a backyard. She has been raped and has a son, Jack (Jacob Tremblay, in a fine juvenile performance), who turns five as the story begins. His "Ma" has done her best to raise him not knowing that he is a prisoner, teaching him all about "room" and all the remarkable things in it. After a night in which their captor turns off the heat, "Ma" pretends that Jack is sick, and then dies, so that he can escape. From there, Jack must learn how to live in the much bigger world. Joan Allen and William H. Macy play the boy's grandparents; Macy's character can't stand that the boy is a child of rape and eventually leaves the picture, never to return. Director Lenny Abrahamsson keeps things on an even keel, staying close, but not exclusively, to Jack's point of view as he learns things. The movie is still heavy in spots, but moves along cleanly. Besides Tremblay, Brie Larsen is the real core to the movie. She has already proven herself a wonderfully intuitive actress in better movies (especially Short Term 12), but she will likely receive her first Oscar nomination for this. read more...
