Punk the Capital: Building a Sound Movement (2021)

Punk rock fans know that Bad Brains and Minor Threat were the centerpiece bands of the Washington D.C. scene of the early 1980s, but Paul Bishow and James Schneider's documentary Punk the Capital: Building a Sound Movement does an excellent job of fleshing out the story, and giving it a backbone. It turns out that the two legendary bands did not simply appear out of nowhere. There were earlier punk bands, like the Slickee Boys and the surprisingly polished, melodic Tru Fax and the Insaniacs (an early Green Day?), that started things rolling. And, they get quite a few badass points, given that a town like D.C. was full of stuffed shirts that did not like a punk movement, not one little bit. Starting a punk band in New York, L.A., or San Francisco was cool, but starting one in D.C. was quite a bit more dangerous, with more serious opposition. read more...

Apollo 11 (2019)

Until now, the documentary For All Mankind (1989) looked to be the definitive word on the 1969 moon landing, but this one easily tops it. Prepared for the fiftieth anniversary, Apollo 11 consists of 93 minutes of astounding color footage, some of it shot in 70mm, and put together by filmmaker Todd Douglas Miller. It uses no new narration, commentary, or music. It focuses on all the preparations leading up to the mission, the general feeling in the air among regular folks, and the mission itself, up to, including, and beyond, "that's one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind." Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin, and Michael Collins (whose name I will never forget again) are featured. It was released in some IMAX theaters. read more...

Matangi / Maya / M.I.A. (2018)

Like the Oscar-winning Amy Winehouse documentary Amy, Steve Loveridge's Matangi/Maya/M.I.A. contains tons of video footage of its subject, pop star M.I.A., from almost her entire life. So we see young Maya at art school, visiting her grandmother in Sri Lanka, and tapping out beats for what would become her first songs. Born the daughter of Arular Pragasam, the originator of the Tamil Tigers, she grew up with rebelliousness in her blood, and danger at her front door. Watching this film, it makes absolute sense that, in celebrity interviews, she would want to talk about genocide in her home country, rather than Hollywood gossip. Without wasting too much time, the movie details her meteoric rise to fame, and creating songs that actually meant something to her and came from her own experience, as well as her penchant for getting into trouble (mostly extending her middle finger during a Super Bowl performance and sending the world into a tizzy). It doesn't linger over any tragedies and always shows its spunky star bouncing back, ready for another round. The movie is probably already too far in her court to win over any new fans, but if you're an old fan, you'll thoroughly enjoy the blunt, brisk energy here. read more...

    Dealt (2017)

Richard Turner is an amazing figure, a close-up card-trick magician (he prefers "mechanic") who is completely blind. He knows the cards so well, with his fingers, that he can locate any card at any time. Luke Korem's documentary Dealt tells Turner's story, from his days of being inspired by TV cowboys, his reckless, daredevil days — he has black belt in karate — to his gradual loss of sight. He began to channel his "nervous energy" into cards, shuffling and cutting them, until he became a master. The film shows him working out (he's in great shape in his late 50s), and trying to get around with the help of his son Asa (also known as "Asa Spades"). read more...

Public Enemy: It Takes a Nation - The First London Tour 1987 (2005)

If you listen to the first few minutes of Public Enemy's immortal album It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back (1988) -- now considered by many critics to be the greatest album of the 1980s -- you'll hear the opening moments of what sounds like an amazing concert. A British fellow gets on stage and introduces this legendary New York rap group, a siren kicks in, followed by hammering beats and warlike cries to "crank this shit up and get busy." Now fans can see that concert on MVD's extraordinary new DVD, but instead of fading out, as it does on the album, the concert keeps going, with Chuck D, Flavor Flav, Terminator X, Professor Griff and the others pounding through classics like "Countdown to Armageddon," "Bring the Noise," "Rightstarter" and "Rebel Without a Pause." read more...
