I'll See You in My Dreams (2015)

Here is something very rarely seen, a movie not only with a female lead, but a movie with a female lead over forty. Despite that novelty, Blythe Danner gives an amazing, truly touching performance. Writer-director Brett Haley may seem like the wrong man for this material, but he lends it an appealingly soft touch. Neither the tragedy nor the comedy is forced or foreshadowed too heavily. In this movie, everything — even awkward moments — just happens naturally and gracefully. read more...

For the Love of Spock (2016)

Adam Nimoy directed this basic, but very loving tribute to his father Leonard Nimoy, daring to get a little more personal and a little less reverential than an average Star Trek fan might have done. For the Love of Spock is a loving look back at the career of actor Leonard Nimoy, and specifically the impact of his Star Trek character Mr. Spock. It uses all the typical documentary techniques, including many clips from movies and TV, photos, advertising materials, interviews, speaking engagements, and recordings, as well as new interviews; the younger Nimoy began interviewing his father for this film before he died, so there's plenty of fresh material. read more...

    127 Hours (2010)

One weekend Aron Ralston (James Franco) decides to go hiking and climbing by himself. He haphazardly packs his backpack with water and supplies and heads out. He spends some time with two girls (Amber Tamblyn and Kate Mara), who are lost, and shows them an underground lake. They part ways, and a little later, Aron slips and falls into a canyon. A boulder lands on top of his arm, pinning him and trapping him. For five days, Aron tries to escape, rations his food and water, tries to keep warm, and passes the time by remembering and imagining his friends and family. He eventually decides that, to escape, he needs to make a painful sacrifice. read more...

      Little Voice (1998)

Back in 1979, when Diana Ross played Billie Holiday in Lady Sings the Blues, there was much speculation as to whether or not Ross actually sounded like Holiday. The consensus was that it was Ross interpreting Holiday's songs so that, in the end, it was okay. It's too bad that Jane Horrocks wasn't around then. read more...
