    In Old Arizona (1929)

Short story master O. Henry probably had no idea how popular his Cisco Kid character would become when he wrote "The Caballero's Way" in 1904. The character turned up in silent movies, "B" movies and on television for decades to come, played by everyone from Ceasar Romero to Jimmy Smits. But the most popular interpretation has to be this 1929 version, directed by Raoul Walsh with Irving Cummings. As the Cisco Kid, Warner Baxter was so effective that he won an Oscar for Best Actor and became a big star. read more...

      Shack Out on 101 (1955)

Edward Dein's Shack Out on 101 is a truly bizarre little item. It's mostly an innocuous little drama taking place in a run-down diner, chronicling the minor power struggles between the denizens therein. But in the middle of it, it's a paranoid thriller, tuning into the McCarthy-fueled hysteria that anyone -- anyone at all -- could be selling secrets to the Commies for any reason. read more...

        Appointment with Danger (1951)

Olive Films has happily ended up with a whole bunch of Paramount's back catalog titles, and even if none of them (so far) are terribly major films, it's good to have them around. read more...

          Valdez Is Coming (1971)

Burt Lancaster is quite good in the title role in Valdez Is Coming, although here in 2018, it's the kind of role that would raise hackles; why did it have to be played by a white actor, when it's a perfectly good role for a Latino actor? In any case, with a story by Elmore Leonard, the movie has its good points, notably its intriguingly gray-area setup. A rich white landowner has a black man trapped in a cabin. He claims the black man has committed some crime. Valdez goes to the cabin to speak to him, and it's confirmed that he is, in fact, not guilty. But one of the landowner's nasty henchman has crept up behind Valdez with a gun. The black man sees this, thinks he has been double-crossed, and attacks Valdez. Valdez shoots and kills the man. It's clearly not his fault, but he did pull the trigger. read more...

            Bad Turn Worse (2014)

Feeling like a forgotten offspring of Blood Simple, Red Rock West, and Reservoir Dogs, Bad Turn Worse is an above average Texas crime tale, beginning over breakfast with a discussion of biscuits and gravy and Jim Thompson novels. read more...
