The Counselor (2013)
I missed the press screening of Ridley Scott's The Counselor due to a screening conflict with Bad Grandpa (of all things), so I missed out on all the early buzz. It was not long before I started hearing very negative things about it, such as: It's dumb. It has no thrills or suspense. It's slow and boring. It doesn't live up to expectations. read more...

Night Moves (2014)
Director Kelly Reichardt ( Wendy and Lucy, Meek's Cutoff) is one of the smartest around, capable of telling simple stories with great stretches of moody, thoughtful exploration. A frequent criticism is that "nothing happens" in her movies, which, for a patient viewer, simply isn't true. In those quiet scenes, life itself can be found. Night Moves is one of her most complex works yet, generating a slow-burning suspense. read more...

Topaz (1969)
A lengthy espionage thriller with no American stars, Topaz nevertheless shows Hitchcock in peak form. A French intelligence agent works with an American one to figure out what the Russians are doing in Cuba. The great French star Michel Piccoli ( Contempt, Belle de Jour) appears as a bad guy. This disc contains an outstanding documentary hosted by critic Leonard Maltin in which he explains that even just a "good" Hitchcock film is better than most people's "great" films. read more...
