    True Story (2015)

It's difficult to argue against Jonah Hill as a fine actor. He has two Oscar nominations, and he was terrific in movies ranging from Superbad to Cyrus. But it's also hard to make a case for him as a leading man, in a totally serious role. In True Story, he just doesn't quite seem right as Michael Finkel, a New York Times reporter who plays poker with his colleagues while chatting on the phone and finishing a story under a tight deadline. He tries to be cocky, but his comic persona seems to be bursting at the seams, trying to get out. read more...

    Snowden (2016)

The main question regarding Oliver Stone's new biopic Snowden, which opens Friday in Bay Area theaters, is — in addition to whether it's worth seeing — is whether, compared to the 2014 documentary Citizenfour, it's even relevant. read more...

    Five Minutes of Heaven (2009)

Directed by Oliver Hirschbiegel (Downfall, The Invasion), this talky little drama about two men not meeting is exceedingly well-written and very efficiently made, with surprisingly good mood-setters and dramatic deflections. read more...

    Remember (2016)

Canadian director Atom Egoyan offers his best work in ages with this quietly observant drama. Paying special attention to sounds, places, and tones, the movie turns unexpectedly moving and powerful. Remember recalls Egoyan's best films, Exotica, Felicia's Journey, and the Oscar-nominated The Sweet Hereafter; like those, it's an exploration of unsettling things simmering under the surface. A lesser director could have played this like a cheap thriller, with more suspense, but Egoyan explores the deeper meanings of things. read more...

      The Ice Storm (1997)

The Taiwan-born, but decidedly international, filmmaker Ang Lee has made films about mismatched partners, tortured souls, and characters displaced within their environments, searching for solace. In The Ice Storm (1997), these elements come together in one film, possibly his best. Based on the novel by Rick Moody and set in 1973, in an era when husbands and wives were playing at "key parties," a typically cracked family assembles for Thanksgiving. The father (Kevin Kline) is having an affair, the mother (Joan Allen) is having a spiritual crisis, the 14 year-old daughter (Christina Ricci) likes to play sexual games, and 16 year-old son (Tobey Maguire) is sexually inexperienced but obsessed with a pretty girl (Katie Holmes) at his school. Lee provides succinct dialogue readings and scenes that sum up great waves of emotions and conflict. Most striking is the ice storm of the title, wherein one of the characters finds himself in awe of, and at odds with, the beautiful, bitter landscape. Sigourney Weaver is magnificent as a woman of many affairs. read more...
