The Max Linder Collection (1921)

Max Linder was an early, tragic figure in silent comedy. He was born in France and made many short comedies beginning in 1905. He began directing in 1908, by 1912 was the most popular and highest-paid film star in the world. He apparently influenced Chaplin. He eventually came to Hollywood and made three features, but scarred from the first World War and unable to fit in, he eventually returned to France and committed suicide in 1925. read more...

Scooby-Doo! WrestleMania Mystery (2014)

Scooby-Doo! WrestleMania Mystery is apparently the twenty-first of the direct-to-video, feature-length, animated Scooby-Doo movies, but it's the first one I've actually seen all the way through. My son is a Scooby fan, but he never took to the longer stories until now. (I think it was a combination of length and scariness factor.) In any case, I was impressed at how well these beloved old characters translate to the longer running time, and we both enjoyed ourselves. read more...

A Charlie Brown Christmas (1965)

Arguably the greatest TV Christmas special of all time, Bill Melendez and Charles Schultz's A Charlie Brown Christmas -- which first aired on CBS on December 9, 1965 -- was not like other Christmas specials. Rather than telling a story about Santa Claus or about getting the perfect gift, it was about how Christmas can be kind of a bummer sometimes, and that, yes, it's awfully commercial, but if we come together and care just a little bit, small miracles can happen. read more...
