Mechanic: Resurrection (2016)

It's difficult for anyone involved to sell this sequel as anything more than a lazy cash-grab. It's weakly plotted, emotionally empty, and, with the exception of one intense set-piece, visually inept. read more...

Replicas (2019)

This frustrating, total failure of a sci-fi thriller is so full of lapses in logic, and is so consistently nonsensical, that its myriad mistakes completely eclipse all attempts at story and character. read more...

Chandu the Magician (1932)

The ridiculousness of the story of Chandu the Magician is trumped by its wonderful design, its impressive "magic" effects, and its many terrific miniatures, all designed by William Cameron Menzies, and by the lush, shadowy cinematography by James Wong Howe. If not for those things, the story about a scientist who has invented a death ray, which is then stolen, would be just a forgettable bit of "B" trash. (I mean, honestly, what scientist invents a death ray that can reach HALFWAY AROUND THE WORLD and then is surprised when a supervillain steals it?) read more...

    The Earth Dies Screaming (1964)

The best of the Hammer Horror directors, Terence Fisher, directed this sci-fi quickie somewhere between Dracula and Frankenstein sequels. It's ridiculous in spots, but it's very earnest and has some striking visual ideas. The Earth Dies Screaming begins with humans simply collapsing, some while operating trains or planes, causing crashes. A few humans in the English countryside survive, including the cowboy-like American Jeff Nolan (Willard Parker), who takes charge of the gentler Brits. Quite a lot of the film plays like the as-yet-unmade Night of the Living Dead, as they take refuge in a hotel, argue, and try to figure out what's going on outside. Fisher eventually reveals a few slow-moving robot monsters (pronounced "ro-BUT" by our American friend) and white-eyed humans, and, in the last 10 minutes, the movie cooks up a plan to stop them all. It's shot in black-and-white by Arthur Lavis, and it looks good for what otherwise appears to be a disposable 62-minute "B" movie. Kino Lorber released it on Blu-ray in 2016; it comes with a commentary track by historian Richard Harland Smith and a selection of low-budget sci-fi trailers. read more...

    Sherlock Holmes (2009)

This excellent heart and soul of Guy Ritche's Sherlock Holmes makes up for all the things it does badly. Firstly, it has one of the dullest Holmes villains of all time, Lord Blackwood (Mark Strong), who sneers a lot and wishes to take over the world (yawn). It also goes on far too long (128 minutes), doesn't have much to do with Arthur Conan Doyle, and too much of old London is either demolished or blown to bits. read more...
