Ghost in the Shell (1995)

Along with Akira, Mamoru Oshii's Ghost in the Shell was one of the most influential of all anime films. Released in a dubbed version in American theaters in the spring of 1996, it reached a wider audience than other anime without ever feeling compromised. It felt like an essential movie of its moment, and seeing it again proves that it's even more relevant today, not to mention one of the flat-out best and most entertaining anime ever made. read more...

Blade II (2002)

Wesley Snipes returns as the daywalker, the half-vampire vampire slayer with the Clint Eastwood-like murmur. As in all sequels, we must up the stakes, so Blade teams up with his vampire enemies to fight off a new strain of mutant vampires with jaws that come unhinged (a la Alien). As directed by Guillermo Del Toro (Mimic and The Devil's Backbone) the action jumps back and forth between liquid, lickety-split kung fu to the industry standard quick-cut shaky cam, and it's all lifted from other movies (Dawn of the Dead, mostly). But it's so much adrenaline-pumped B-movie fun, it's nearly worth full price. read more...

Darkman (1990)

Upon its initial release, Darkman was frequently compared to Dick Tracy and Batman, mainly because of the similar, highly artificial comic book-look, as well as similar musical scores by Danny Elfman on all three films. Now that the smoke has cleared, and Hollywood has moved onto other trends, we have Darkman, clear and plain and bright as day (or dark as night). It deserves a second look. read more...

X-Men: First Class (2011)

I'm not sure if this fifth X-Men movie officially qualifies as a "reboot," but it sure injects some life back into a series that fumbled its third and fourth entries. Comic book fan Bryan Singer turned in a solid first entry, X-Men (2000), and an outstanding second entry, X2: X-Men United (2003), but then moneymaking hack Brett Ratner took over for the third movie, X-Men: The Last Stand (2006), and all but killed it. Then, an even worse idea: X-Men Origins: Wolverine (2009), directed by the severely overrated Best Foreign Language Film Oscar winner Gavin Hood. read more...

Batman Returns (1992)

Armed with massive amounts of creative control after the success of Batman (1989), Tim Burton nonetheless turned in for the sequel this bizarre mixture of poetic brilliance and clumsiness. read more...
