Wildlife (2018)

The directorial debut of actor Paul Dano, this airless, dispiriting domestic drama is somewhat saved by its dedication to fine acting, and on moments of stillness in which such acting can flourish. read more...

Driven by a forceful, demolishing performance by Nicole Kidman, and a deliriously complex, snaky screenplay, this mature, intricately-designed crime drama is more memorable, more haunting, than most. read more...

Man Down (2016)

This war drama contains an earnest plea, a call for sympathy and understanding for soldiers suffering from PTSD, but the movie is so scattershot, somber, and confusing, that it never comes together. Director Dito Montiel is also a novelist and likes to tell stories about complex, urban men, but sometimes his ambition exceeds his reach, and his movies end up overly serious and a little simplistic. Man Down has the double-edged misfortune of being simplistic and complex at the same time. read more...

Shoot the Sun Down (1978)

Shoot the Sun Down looks appealing for several reasons. It's a weird Western tale, demanding to be rescued from obscurity, and now presented on a high-def Blu-ray in a restored director's cut. It also stars two great actors, Christopher Walken and Margot Kidder, at the height of their powers. That same year, Walken would go on to win an Oscar for The Deer Hunter, and Kidder was seen throughout the world as Lois Lane in Superman. It also features some recognizable character actors, like Geoffrey Lewis (High Plains Drifter). read more...

    Blind Chance (1981)

I first heard about Krzysztof Kieslowski's Blind Chance (1981) at some point in the 1990s, when movies like Pulp Fiction, Sliding Doors and Run Lola Run began playing around with alternating timelines. (Also, remember that the year Pulp Fiction came out, Kieslowski was being celebrated in the U.S. for his Three Colors trilogy, and especially Red, which would turn out to be his final film.) But, to the best of my knowledge, Blind Chance wasn't available to see here at that time, and indeed, it hadn't been released even in its native Poland until 1987. But now the Criterion Collection has given it a striking new Blu-ray release, with most of its censored scenes restored (although one scene in particular apparently couldn't be rescued). read more...
