Rabbit Hole (2010)

Howie likes going to his group therapy meetings, shared with other parents that have lost children, even though the majority of them spend too much time talking about God. Becca gets fed up with these meetings, but Howie keeps going and forms a small bond with Gaby (Sandra Oh), a longtime veteran of the group. Meanwhile, Becca -- who quit her job to be a full-time mother -- has a much harder time being in the house, and looking at the myriad of reminders. One day, she spots the teenage driver, Jason (Miles Teller), who accidentally struck and killed her boy. She gets the idea to follow him and speak to him... not to blame him, but just to find some kind of connection. read more...

Down in the Delta (1998)

It's hard to imagine poet/actress/author Maya Angelou, on top of all her many other achievements, saying, "you know, what I really want to do is direct." Yet direct she does, and makes a fine job of it with Down in the Delta, starring Alfre Woodard and Wesley Snipes. At first glance, Down in the Delta may seem like a TV-disease-of-the-week movie and I was not thrilled about having to see it. But, sitting there in the dark, I became tremendously moved by the movie, and I have not forgotten its power. read more...

Still Alice (2014)

Julianne Moore will probably win an Oscar for Best Actress for her work in Still Alice. She recently won the San Francisco Film Critics Circle award in the same category, as well as many other awards so far. She's a great actress. She has been nominated many times but has never won, and has been great in many more films that did not receive nominations. She has been consistently good for more than 20 years, and easily ranks with our best. Her work here is above reproach. read more...

Ikiru (1952)

In the 1940s, America did not see Japanese films, for the very good reason that Japan was our enemy during WWII. But a few years later, in the early 1950s, an influx of masterworks began to trickle in, including Kenji Mizoguchi's Ugetsu, Yasujiro Ozu's Tokyo Story, and Kurosawa's Rashomon and Seven Samurai. Kurosawa was considered the most "Western" of these filmmakers, and his two films struck a nerve with Americans. The samurai must have seemed like cowboys, but in a new and exotic setting, not to mention the gorgeous and fluid visuals of those films, which brought action to a new level of art. read more...

Tallulah (2016)

This Netflix original film falls into the old "weepie/women's picture" category, but it stays stubbornly rooted in characters and moments. It never goes over the top into goopy sentimentality, and if any tears are produced, they are earned. Ellen Page stars in a very strong performance as the title character, a crafty homeless waif living in the back of a truck with her boyfriend, Nico (Evan Jonigkeit). They scrounge for food or steal it, and they have been happy, until Nico decides to leave. Tallulah sneaks into a hotel to pick at the food left in the hallway, and is mistaken for a hotel babysitter by the rich, pathetic Carolyn (Tammy Blanchard). read more...
