The Red Violin (1999)

The Red Violin is a surprisingly exciting and delicate epic filmed in several different countries and languages, by writer/director Francois Girard (32 Short Films About Glenn Gould). The movie follows the 300 year-history of a beautiful and perfect violin, which is imbued with its maker's dead wife's spirit. In a 1990s auction several characters who have a history with the violin bid on it. Samuel L. Jackson is brilliant as a violin expert who wants the violin for himself. The movie stumbles on a few conventional moments now and then, but it works well all the same. Greta Scacchi (The Player) also stars. John Corigliano's musical score won an Oscar. read more...

French Cancan (1954)

The colorful forerunner to Moulin Rouge, Jean Renoir's French Cancan tells a romantic story of the famous club's origins. Jean Gabin stars as an aging showman who discovers a beautiful little laundress (Françoise Arnoul) and teaches her to dance for the stage. She falls in love with him, but, alas, he's not hers to have. In the meantime, a wealthy prince and a modest baker also fall for her. This is lighter than usual fare for Renoir, but his usual gracefulness is ever-present and he adds a distinct human center to the color and dazzle. read more...

As Tears Go By (1988)

Wong Kar-wai's feature debut As Tears Go By features the gorgeous Maggie Cheung in her first serious role. It finally convinced a generation of Hong Kong movie fans that she could really act, and not just play Jackie Chan's airhead girlfriend (Project A II, Supercop: Police Story III). Coming in the middle of the HK New Wave, and telling yet another Triad gangster story, it doesn't distinguish itself as a great debut. Yet it's an excellent film, fluid in its use of color, slow motion and other flashy techniques, combined with street realism. Andy Lau plays a tough guy who is saddled with a loose-cannon "younger brother" who continually gets himself into trouble. Lau becomes torn between his loyalty toward his friend and his love for his naïve country cousin (Cheung). read more...

Sabrina (1954)

Sabrina is something of a conundrum for me. It's not a totally successful movie by any means. Writer-director Billy Wilder was unable to reasonably solve the love triangle between Hepburn and her two much older suitors (Humphrey Bogart and William Holden), neither of which was any prize to begin with. Yet, it's a perfect Audrey Hepburn vehicle, with her role as a chauffeur's daughter living over the garage of a huge mansion, and dreamily gazing at its opulent backyard parties. She knows -- and we know -- that she really belongs in one of them, twirling away in some fantastic dress. She sends the customers away with a warm, satisfied feeling. read more...

Rebecca (1940)

Based on the novel by Daphne du Maurier, Alfred Hitchcock's Rebecca (1940) remains one of the Master's most overrated and underrated movies at the same time. It's based on a gothic romance rather than a traditional suspense story, and, at 130 minutes, it's one of Hitch's longest pictures. It was the director's first American picture and was heavily controlled by producer David O. Selznick. It won an Oscar for Best Picture, which Selznick collected, but not one for its director (John Ford won for The Grapes of Wrath). read more...
