The Glass Castle (2017)

Based on Jeannette Walls' bestselling memoir, this drama could have been edgier, but it settles on a certain genre type, cozily presenting itself as a four-hankie weepie graced with fine performances. read more...

Beautiful Boy (2018)

This movie has a lot of hugging. Expertly acted to be sure, the drug addiction drama Beautiful Boy is also grueling and repetitive; it's so bland and detached that it wobbles between making drug use look sexy and being an after-school special. Timothy Hutton even shows up in one scene as a doctor, explaining and diagraming the scientific facts about the horrors of crystal meth use. read more...

Jenny's Wedding (2015)

Incredibly earnest in its intentions, this lesson in tolerance suffers from astoundingly bad filmmaking, unlikeable characters, and misguided attempts at metaphor. read more...

Moonlight and Valentino (1995)

I have a movie rule called the "dead-baby rule." In any film, if someone dies, and then a baby is born at the end of the movie to symbolize the circle of life, I don't wanna hear about it. This is a cheap way of getting audience sympathy without actually having to work for it by creating interesting characters or dramatic tension. (An amendment to this rule is that terminal diseases are also a copout). I expected at any moment in Moonlight and Valentino for a character to get pregnant, or get a terminal disease and die. But as the movie started rolling, a strange thing happened. I started getting involved in the characters. I began laughing at Whoopi Goldberg's antics (something I haven't done in a very long time, as this talented actress has a knack for choosing very bad scripts). Characters that I thought would be one-dimensional began growing other dimensions. In the end, the goopy stuff was kept to a minimum, and the interesting character development won out. read more...

The Help (2011)

I just caught up with The Help, after it earned $169 million at the American box office, and scored four Oscar nominations, including Best Picture. It's also the thirteenth highest grossing movie of the year, and the #1 movie of the year that's not a sequel, prequel, remake or franchise of some kind. Here are some quick thoughts. read more...
