The Circle (2000)

Just a few weeks ago, the Shooting Gallery film series released Marziyeh Meshkini's and Mohsen Makhmalbaf's The Day I Became a Woman. I was afraid then that no one would see that beautiful and vibrant film because it seemed to be about "battered Iranian women," though it was really about their breathtaking attempts to escape domination. Now comes Jafar Panahi's The Circle, a far more heavyweight, but equally brilliant film about women whose escape seems unlikely. read more...

Mountains May Depart (2016)

Jia Zhang-ke's eighth feature film, Mountains May Depart, feels like something of a departure. It still features his muse Zhao Tao in prominent role (and giving a great performance), and it still deals with the ever-changing economy and social structure in China, but it somehow comes across, above all, as a kind of melodrama. It's like something Meryl Streep could star in. This is not necessarily a bad thing, but it does make the film feel a step or two down from Jia's greatest works, the ones that carefully touch upon his various themes without ever seeming like he's touching upon them. read more...

A Fantastic Woman (2017)

A current Oscar nominee for Best Foreign Language Film, Sebastian Lelio's A Fantastic Woman is perhaps an even stronger work than his previous Gloria, though both are nuanced, interior portraits of people who judged as outsiders before they've even had a chance. A Fantastic Woman opens as divorced 57-year-old Orlando (Francisco Reyes) tries to find some important papers before heading to a nightclub. He pauses to watch a pretty singer, Marina (Daniela Vega), before we realize that he has a date with her. read more...

    They'll Love Me When I'm Dead (2018)

To accompany Netflix's release of Orson Welles' completed The Other Side of the Wind, Morgan Neville directed the documentary They'll Love Me When I'm Dead to explain the complex behind-the-scenes of this monumental film, and the final years of Welles' life. Neville was faced with the problem of how to make a film that might compliment Welles' visual genius, and he comes up with several solutions that work. He interviews his key players from strange angles, in black-and-white, and cuts together their sound bites in ways that are fascinatingly conflicting. Alan Cumming is here as host and narrator, and he also appears in black-and-white, at editing bays and in other arty shots full of reflections and other playful concepts. The documentary itself is full of information, such as the casting and cutting of Rich Little in the Brooks Otterlake role that Peter Bogdanovich eventually took over, or the fact that Welles himself served as a stand-in for the Jake Hannaford role until John Huston was hired to embody it. Thankfully, Neville is ultimately not concerned with celebrating Welles' genius, but in trying to understand the human being behind it. He winds up with a surprisingly touching film, and one that makes you want to go back and look at The Other Side of the Wind some more. read more...

      The Life of Oharu (1952)

The life of Oharu is not a good one. She never seems to get a break. Even if it looks like she's about to get some good news, it's evident that the other shoe is about to drop. What's more, Oharu (Kinuyo Tanaka) never did anything to anyone to deserve this kind of life (if you can call it "life"). She merely exists. read more...
