Great Expectations (1998)

Alfonso Cuaron updates Dickens to the 1990s with lots of gorgeous color and vivid eroticism. Ethan Hawke stars as "Finn" (not "Pip"), who is an artist this time out. Miss Havisham is now Ms. Dinsmoor (Anne Bancroft), who invites young Finn over to amuse her and dance with the beautiful young Estella. Robert De Niro is the escaped convict who surprises the youngster in the opening scenes (he leaps out of a Florida stream, rather than appearing in a graveyard). Finn's guardian Joe (Chris Cooper) is now a fisherman, rather than a blacksmith. And on and on. read more...

Romeo and Juliet (2013)

To put it plainly, Carlo Carlei's version of Romeo and Juliet is the worst Shakespeare movie adaptation I've ever seen. Admittedly I've not seen all of them, but I've seen more than twenty, and this one is the worst. It did not help at all that Oscar-winning screenwriter Julian Fellowes (Gosford Park) adapted the screenplay. read more...

A Star Is Born (2018)

If nothing else, the fourth version of A Star Is Born shows that Bradley Cooper knows his way around the back of a camera, and that Lady Gaga is a natural-born star. Otherwise, it's not a particularly great or profound movie, but it's a hugely enjoyable one, with so many amazing scenes that it hardly matters whether they add up to anything. read more...

Allied (2016)

Deliberately evoking Casablanca (1942), director Robert Zemeckis proves with this wartime romance that he is, like Michael Curtiz, a highly skilled craftsman, and a maker of solid, efficient entertainments. read more...

The Woman on the Beach (1947)

This was the fifth and final film Jean Renoir made in English during his Hollywood sojourn, after Swamp Water (1941), This Land Is Mine (1943), The Southerner (1945), and Diary of a Chambermaid (1946); unfortunately, it was also the film that hastened his departure. According to some reports, Renoir screened a cut for an audience in Santa Barbara, which snickered all the way through. He then frantically and recklessly re-shot and re-edited, and wound up with the 71-minute cut that exists today (the excised footage is apparently no longer around). read more...
