The Hills Have Eyes Part II (1984)

Looking at this low-budget, quickie sequel, it's hard to imagine that it came just after Wes Craven's triumph with A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984). What could have inspired such lazy filmmaking? A group of BMX bikers, on their way to a competition, takes an unwise short cut through the desert and encounters the same hideous cannibal sand dwellers from Craven's legendary 1977 original. Their bus breaks down, and while they look for gas, they're picked off one by one. Craven's most unique touch is using a blind character as the virginal "final girl" (she has a boyfriend, but she still appears chaste). The dialogue and situations are basically ridiculous, and even when one of the girls needlessly takes a shower (!) in the middle of it all, Craven fails to show the good parts (though there is one gratuitous sex scene). There are flashbacks to the first film, and this movie has perhaps the first and only dog flashback (!) in movie history. Somehow, Kino Video -- under the label "Horizon Movies" -- felt compelled to release this anew on DVD and Blu-Ray for 2012. The only extras are a trailer and a photo gallery. read more...

Isle of the Dead (1945)

General Nikolas Pherides, a.k.a. "the Watchdog" (Boris Karloff), is among a group of people quarantined on a Greek island. Paranoia sets in when an old woman accuses a beautiful housekeeper (Ellen Drew) of being a "vorvolaka," or a kind of vampire. Directed by Mark Robson, it's probably the most uneven of all the Val Lewton horror films, but it also contains a few genuine scares. read more...

White Zombie (1932)

Following the enormous hit Dracula (1931) Bela Lugosi had the world in his pocket. He could have done just about anything, except for the fact that Hollywood and all the movie fans only wanted him to play more horror parts. Puzzlingly, he took a role in the low budget film White Zombie. Perhaps he liked the theatricality of the role, or that it was another leading part. But even though White Zombie was, and is, a terrific film, it only further cemented Lugosi's career as a horror star. Fans of Tim Burton's Ed Wood (1994) may recognize it as the film that Johnny Depp and Martin Landau watch on television. read more...

Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension (2015)

Very tenuously connected to the rest of the Paranormal Activity films, this sixth entry follows the familiar routine, with the same old scares and no fresh ideas. It struggles simply to make sense. read more...

Deadly Blessing (1981)

After making a splash in the 1970s with grindhouse hits The Last House on the Left and The Hills Have Eyes, director Wes Craven followed it up with this relatively unknown title. But although it's less gruesome than its predecessors, it's no less effective and worth seeing. The story takes place near a community of "Hittites," who "make the Amish look like swingers." Martha (Maren Jensen, who retired after this) is happily married to Jim (Doug Barr), who left his community to be with her. Unfortunately, he's killed, and Martha asks her two best friends, Lana (Sharon Stone) and Vicky (Susan Buckner) to stay with her awhile. Meanwhile, one of the hittites is murdered as well, the simple-minded William (Michael Berryman, also in The Hills Have Eyes), who liked to spy on Martha. And an unhappy Hittite man becomes attracted to Vicky, who wanders around in shorts and a tank top. More nastiness happens, and it becomes clear that a killer is on the loose. Ernest Borgnine is wonderful as a stern, traditional fellow, scowling at everyone through his beard (although he did earn a Razzie nomination). Craven was already developing his incredible knack for using three-dimensional space for nefarious purposes, especially in the scene with Sharon Stone trapped in a dark barn. A movie theater marquee shows Craven's previous movie, the made-for-TV Summer of Fear. read more...
