Midsummer in Newtown (2017)

Though it's not exactly high-quality journalism or thought-provoking commentary, this deeply moving documentary takes a tender, humble approach to a community's suffering and its attempts at healing. read more...

[email protected] (2007)

In the wonderful new documentary Young @ Heart, a group of seventy, eighty and ninety-year olds get together and perform songs by Sonic Youth, Coldplay, James Brown, the Clash, David Bowie, the Ramones and other contemporary bands. It sounds dubious and cutesy, but within minutes it reveals itself as the real thing and doubt gives way to unbridled enthusiasm. It's the type of film that sometimes becomes a word-of-mouth hit, although converts won't want to talk too much about what happens; as you may guess, some of the singers don't have long to live and one or two of them don't make it to the end of the film. Several characters become fascinating in their own right, but none more so than troupe director Bob Cilman, who does not pander to his singers because of their age. He's a tough, brutal drill sergeant, but he can open his heart when it matters most. The film's director Stephen Walker adds his own narration and occasionally enters into the film, which somehow makes it feel less like a documentary; Walker is just as caught up in the moment as we are. Walker's wife, the producer Sally George, directed several funny music videos featuring the group, but the film's highlight has to be a truly emotionally overwhelming concert at a prison. (As of today, the group has a following in Europe and has a CD available.) read more...

Wadjda (2013)

Haifaa Al-Mansour is the first female filmmaker in Saudi Arabia, and Wadjda is the first feature film directed by a woman in Saudi Arabia. Apparently, she was forced to do most of her work via monitors and walkie-talkies from the inside of a van, since men and women are not allowed to be seen working together. read more...

    Goodbye Christopher Robin (2017)

Although Goodbye Christopher Robin is another awards-season biopic, this one manages to avoid most of the genre trappings by telling a more focused story, a story that's about something, rather than simply someone's "life story." (It's even somewhat kid-friendly.) The movie focuses on writer A.A. (Alan) Milne (Domhnall Gleeson), who comes home from The Great War full of trauma and anxiety. He wishes to write about the horrors of war, and decides to move to the quiet of the country with his wife Daphne (Margot Robbie) and their young son Christopher. He's unable to write for a while, and he broods while Daphne shops and sharply reproaches their nanny, Olive (Kelly Macdonald). Christopher, however (played by many different children at different ages), loves Olive dearly. read more...

    Beastie Boys Story (2020)

Following their bestselling and highly entertaining Beastie Boys Book, Michael Diamond (Mike D.) and Adam Horovitz (Ad-Rock) took to the stage to do a live, slide-show version of their story. Director Spike Jonze (who made the band's great Sabotage music video in 1994) filmed what appears to be the last of these (although there are clips from other shows) and turned it into a feature-length documentary; Beastie Boys Story was meant to be shown in theaters, but due to the COVID-19 outbreak, it is debuting exclusively on Apple TV+. As my brother so aptly put it, it's like a TED Talk, with Mike and Adam sharing the stage, trading lines (there are jokes about their use of a teleprompter), while slides and videos play on the screen behind them. Jonzes's camera moves about, but never gets so busy that it distracts from the main event. Mistakes are allowed to creep in, and Jonze's voice can be heard apologizing from the back of the auditorium. As in the book, quite a lot of the stories are about singing the praises of the late, great Adam Yauch (MCA), who sadly died from cancer in 2012 at the age of 47. He was, according to his friends, a genius, innovator, considerate, curious, and a mystery. The best thing about Beastie Boys Story is the way the musicians are allowed to change and grow. The making of 1986's License to Ill is exciting and fresh, but later, they are allowed to regret some of their choices, and to learn from the experience. It's unlikely that non-Beastie fans will get much out of this, but fans will enjoy every moment of it. Apparently, Bill Hader provides the voice of the "crazy shit" title card that comes up. Watch to the very end for a few other little surprise appearances. read more...
