Manchester by the Sea (2016)

Kenneth Lonergan (You Can Count on Me, Margaret) isn't a particularly visual film director, but he is a hell of a good writer, and capable of making his pictures move through pure emotion, not only love and hate and anger, but also less tangible things like regret and uncertainty. His Manchester by the Sea, helped along by a wintry New England backdrop, invites us into a powerful, rounded, and fully-realized story of several lives affected by a death. read more...

Mountains May Depart (2016)

Jia Zhang-ke's eighth feature film, Mountains May Depart, feels like something of a departure. It still features his muse Zhao Tao in prominent role (and giving a great performance), and it still deals with the ever-changing economy and social structure in China, but it somehow comes across, above all, as a kind of melodrama. It's like something Meryl Streep could star in. This is not necessarily a bad thing, but it does make the film feel a step or two down from Jia's greatest works, the ones that carefully touch upon his various themes without ever seeming like he's touching upon them. read more...

They'll Love Me When I'm Dead (2018)

To accompany Netflix's release of Orson Welles' completed The Other Side of the Wind, Morgan Neville directed the documentary They'll Love Me When I'm Dead to explain the complex behind-the-scenes of this monumental film, and the final years of Welles' life. Neville was faced with the problem of how to make a film that might compliment Welles' visual genius, and he comes up with several solutions that work. He interviews his key players from strange angles, in black-and-white, and cuts together their sound bites in ways that are fascinatingly conflicting. Alan Cumming is here as host and narrator, and he also appears in black-and-white, at editing bays and in other arty shots full of reflections and other playful concepts. The documentary itself is full of information, such as the casting and cutting of Rich Little in the Brooks Otterlake role that Peter Bogdanovich eventually took over, or the fact that Welles himself served as a stand-in for the Jake Hannaford role until John Huston was hired to embody it. Thankfully, Neville is ultimately not concerned with celebrating Welles' genius, but in trying to understand the human being behind it. He winds up with a surprisingly touching film, and one that makes you want to go back and look at The Other Side of the Wind some more. read more...

    Good Kill (2015)

Though Andrew Niccol's Good Kill -- which claims to be based on actual events -- is heavy and preachy, with characters making too many speeches, Ethan Hawke's powerful performance humanizes this incendiary material and gives it an emotional heft. Writer/director Andrew Niccol specializes in movies about humans trapped in mechanized worlds, though he usually achieves a bit more success with a bit of irony infused in the storytelling. read more...

    Remember (2016)

Canadian director Atom Egoyan offers his best work in ages with this quietly observant drama. Paying special attention to sounds, places, and tones, the movie turns unexpectedly moving and powerful. Remember recalls Egoyan's best films, Exotica, Felicia's Journey, and the Oscar-nominated The Sweet Hereafter; like those, it's an exploration of unsettling things simmering under the surface. A lesser director could have played this like a cheap thriller, with more suspense, but Egoyan explores the deeper meanings of things. read more...
