The Wild Angels (1966)

In 1966, Roger Corman had put in ten years of directing several movies per year. He had wrapped up his Poe series and was looking for new artistic directions. He hit upon the idea of making a real Hell's Angels movie, wherein the angels were the heroes (as opposed to the 1950s movie The Wild One). He hired real Angels to work on the movie, and though the shoot was far from smooth and incident-free, The Wild Angels turned into one of Corman's biggest hits. It inspired a whole slew of biker movies and counterculture movies, such as Corman's own The Trip (1967), Richard Rush's Psych-Out (1968), and eventually, Easy Rider (1969). read more...

The Quiet Ones (2014)

Supposedly based on a true story, one that four different writers then adapted to the screen, The Quiet Ones doesn't actually tell a story or develop any kind of rising suspense or tingling chills so much as it does present a series of jump-shocks and sudden, loud noises. Half of these are actually related to the movie, and the other half are false scares, like a champagne cork going off, or someone accidentally dropping something. read more...

The Vatican Tapes (2015)

Director Mark Neveldine is known for his looney, kinetic cult movies (Crank, Gamer, Crank: High Voltage, Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance), but his demon-possession movie, despite a shock ending, can't quite get past the limitations of a genre that peaked with The Exorcist (1973). The Vatican Tapes begins with the idea that the Vatican has recorded proof of dozens of possessions, but then settles in on a rather dull example of one particular case. read more...

Da Sweet Blood of Jesus (2015)

Spike Lee's Da Sweet Blood of Jesus is a remake of an obscure 1970s cult item, Ganja and Hess, about black vampires. You'd think that after the drubbing he received for his last remake, Oldboy, he would have stayed away. And, despite his high style and his passion, he has created an oddly flat movie. As you're watching, it makes you recall -- or imagine -- the 1970s version. It must have been more of a head trip. Lee's movie feels less trippy than it feels like treading water (or blood). read more...

Dagon (2001)

The Chicago theater director and filmmaker Stuart Gordon remains the premier adaptor of H.P. Lovecraft stories to film. This is perhaps because he doesn't attempt any kind of direct translation; Lovecraft's stories are so much about imagination and nightmares. Gordon's approach always includes a kind of twisted humor that somehow suggests the unnamable quality of the horror without trying to actually name it. Dagon was his fourth Lovecraft feature film, and, to date, his last (although he did a fifth for the TV series "Masters of Horror"). It's based partly on the 1919 story "Dagon" but also the 1936 story "The Shadow Over Innsmouth," and the blend is inspired. read more...
