Brave (2012)

Some critics have been giving Brave fairly tepid notices, perhaps tapping into the so-called "production troubles" that have circulated through the rumor mill, or perhaps unfairly comparing it to other Pixar titles. But whatever the reason, these folks have cheated themselves out of an excellent movie, and one that I'd rank among the top half of Pixar's output thus far. (And a massive improvement over the last one, Cars 2.) read more...

Rise of the Guardians (2012)

Last year, at Christmastime, on two separate occasions, I brought my son to see Santa Claus Conquers the Martians (a revival of the 1964 film), and the then-new Arthur Christmas. Both were wonderful experiences that made our holiday brighter. But something else occurred to me: Santa Claus is cool. He's like a superhero, or a super-spy, or a badass. He can do just about anything, and look good doing it. read more...

Up (2009)

Pixar's tenth animated feature film clocks in as one of their best. It's a fairly light, simple entertainment, without the sheer genius of the first hour of WALL-E, but it's also more balanced and satisfying than that film. In terms of its use of space and setting, it's a grand, graceful achievement, capturing a genuine feeling of height, gravity, and movement through empty sky. read more...

Inside Out (2015)

In 1995, Pixar made history with the first, full-length animated feature, Toy Story (1995). This breakthrough technical achievement, which was also funny and touching, set a high bar for the studio. They were capable of greatness. In the years since, the studio has come close, with the sequels Toy Story 2 (1999) and Toy Story 3 (2010), which dealt with the pain of growing up and leaving childish things behind. It came close with The Incredibles (2004), a superhero movie about more than just superheroes. It came close with WALL-E (2008), a movie with an ingenious first half that was married with a less ingenious second half. And then director Pete Docter came perhaps closest of all with Up (2009), a beautiful story of love and longing, that, likewise, had a second half that didn't quite match the majesty of the first. read more...

Finding Dory (2016)

Advancing a lovable supporting character to a lead role is sometimes a bad idea (i.e. Cars 2, Minions). But, when the supporting characters are far less annoying than the lead characters, it can be a good idea (i.e. freeing Puss in Boots from Shrek, and the Penguins of Madagascar from the rest of their zoo crew). Pixar's new Finding Dory must have been a tricky prospect, because so many people love Finding Nemo (it's one of the biggest moneymakers in the studio's history) and also because Dory could easily have fallen into a one-joke pattern (her short-term memory loss). read more...
