After the events of The Protector (2005), Kham (Tony Jaa) and his elephant are living peacefully in Thailand. Meanwhile, war is brewing and the opposing sides agree to meet for peace talks. Some bad guys don't want these peace talks to occur, so their plan is to steal Kham's elephant, rig its tusks with explosives, and kill everyone. But to keep Kham from trying to retrieve his pachyderm, they will frame him for murder. This causes endless battalions of killers to come after Kham, and everywhere he goes he must fight off dozens of attackers. The Taking of Pelham One Two Three (1974)

This is gritty, entertaining 1970s filmmaking at its finest. Joseph Sargent directs a fairly simple, yet gripping hijack tale, set in and around New York's subway. Four thugs with color names ("Mr. Blue," "Mr. Gray," etc.) methodically take over a subway car filled with passengers/hostages. They demand one million dollars (non-sequential serial numbers, in fifties and hundreds) to be delivered in one hour. A transit authority cop, Lieutenant Garber (Walter Matthau) finds himself in charge, and most of the snappy, fast-paced movie is spent as characters bark at each other over radio mikes, sending each other orders and updates. read more...

Sicario: Day of the Soldado (2018)

Sicario: Day of the Soldado — the follow-up to 2015's Sicario — is rather unexpected for a sequel. It's a pessimistic, grownup film, and not exactly pop entertainment. read more...

Black Caesar (1973)

One of the essential "blaxploitation" movies of the 1970s, Black Caesar was written and directed by a white man, the prolific Larry Cohen, although it was also based on a white movie, the gangster classic Little Caesar (1930). Fred Williamson plays the title character, actually named Tommy Gibbs, who started life as a shoeshine boy, beat up by a racist cop. As an adult, he takes on the local Italian gangsters in New York — he visits a mafioso in a restaurant and drops a severed ear in a plate of spaghetti — and becomes a powerful crime lord. But of course, his downfall is imminent. Cohen provides some reverse-racial commentary that's interesting, if crude; the hero's mom works as a maid, and he tries to "free" her with his money, but her reaction is not what he expects. The best part of all this is James Brown's funky songs and score, including tracks like "Down and Out in New York City" and "The Boss," as well as the weirdly haunting "Mama's Dead." Tommy was so popular he was brought back for a sequel, Hell Up in Harlem. Olive Films released the Blu-ray in 2015. read more...
