Hyde Park on Hudson (2012)

It's not going too far to suggest that Bill Murray deserves to be mentioned among the greatest comic actors in cinema history. Admittedly though, the idea of him playing Franklin D. Roosevelt, the 32nd President of the United States, is not very funny. But in Roger Michell's Hyde Park on Hudson, FDR becomes a most amusing -- as well as sad and searching -- Murray-like character. read more...

Irma la Douce (1963)

Billy Wilder somehow sustains the lively pace and humor for the two-and-a-half hour color comedy Irma la Douce (1963) in which Shirley MacLaine stars as a popular Paris hooker who falls in love with squeaky-clean beat cop Jack Lemmon (the pair re-teaming after the highly successful The Apartment). This was perhaps Wilder's last modest hit, but it's also one of his lesser films; it's difficult to entirely justify the overwhelming length. André Previn won an Oscar for his score. MacLaine was nominated for Best Actress, as was Joseph LaShelle's color cinematography. Look for Tura Satana (future star of Russ Meyer's Faster, Pussycat! Kill! Kill!) in her first role. read more...

Lost in Translation (2003)

Up until now, Murray has made a habit of giving but never receiving. He can always make other people laugh, but others rarely affect him. Rushmore broke new ground in a small way, showing an earthy sadness covered up by the clowning. But Coppola dismantles this shield for the first time in Murray's 25-year career. She allows him to be funny -- as funny as he's ever been -- but also catches him in touchingly human moments we've never seen from him before. read more...

Up in the Air (2009)

Jason Reitman's Up in the Air flies comfortably with some of the most obvious of Hollywood clichés, but also doubles back and runs right over them. It's an odd duality that has caused some critics to slam the film, but has caused many more critics to over-praise it. Personally, I'm not sure the film always knows what it's doing; it seems to be struggling between populist and satirical impulses. But there are many, many moments it gets right and it's an enjoyable, if minor entry in the year-end movie rush. read more...

Rushmore (1998)

If I were to rank all of today's comedians-turned-actors -- never mind who would be at the bottom -- I would put Jim Carrey, Michael Keaton, and Eddie Murphy near the top. But occupying the very top spot would have to be Bill Murray. In the last ten years, he has given us spectacular turns in Quick Change (1990), which he also co-directed, Groundhog Day (1993), Mad Dog and Glory (1993), Ed Wood (1994), Kingpin (1996), and Wild Things (1998). Before that, he popped up in potent bit parts in Caddyshack (1980), Tootsie (1982), and Little Shop of Horrors (1986), and laid it all on the line for his own pet project, The Razor's Edge (1984), which was unsuccessful, but interesting. read more...
