Kurt Cobain: Montage of Heck (2015)

I am a huge music nerd and Nirvana is perhaps my favorite band of all time. Like an earlier generation and JFK, I remember exactly where I was and what I was doing when I learned that Kurt Cobain was dead, and it affected me deeply; like many others of my age, I had connected with his music in a profound way. (And, yes, I own an old CD of Bleach.) So it's not easy for me to watch a documentary like Brett Morgen's Kurt Cobain: Montage of Heck lightly. But I will say that I liked what I saw. It made me appreciate Kurt's music and artistry anew. Morgen was given access to tons of intimate home movie footage -- so intimate that it shows Courtney Love naked -- and deals openly with Kurt's drug use, mainly as a way to kill his undiagnosed stomach pain. As with Morgen's Chicago 10, the filmmaker also uses animated sequences to flesh out Kurt's audio recordings. We see Kurt bristling at interviewers' questions, and dealing with the music biz. But, ultimately, the movie manages to paint a portrait of a man so very lonely and brilliant that your heart breaks every time he creates something. Morgen uses interviews sparingly, and mainly focuses on Love an Kurt's bandmate Krist Novoselic (who goes all the way back to the beginning of Nirvana), and the movie also serves to exonerate Love from her image as Kurt's destroyer (Kurt clearly loved her very much). The movie includes a ton of amazing music, from well-known and less-known Nirvana recordings to Kurt noodling around with the Beatles' "And I Love Her." read more...

        Mid90s (2018)

Two-time Oscar-nominee Jonah Hill makes his feature directing debut, and also wrote the screenplay, for Mid90s, the powerful story of a thirteen year-old Los Angeles kid who falls in — and finds a family — with a pack of skateboarders. Though Hill's touch is simple and observant, and almost documentary-like, the story's emotions run high, from joyous, as when Stevie (Sunny Suljic) first learns to stay on his board, to harrowing, as when he's pummeled by his bullying older brother (Lucas Hedges). Na-kel Smith is commanding as Ray, the most talented and responsible of the skaters, and Katherine Waterston plays the boys' bewildered mom. The great soundtrack includes incidental music by Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross, as well as an energizing collection of '90s hip-hop. read more...

        Dogtown & Z-Boys (2002)

I know exactly nothing about skateboarding, but this wild, exuberant documentary puts it all in perspective, outlining a crew of 12 surfers-turned-skaters who pioneered the sport -- and, some say, the art form. Directed by the most financially successful of the group, Stacy Peralta, the film features dazzling vintage 1970s footage mixed with current talking head interviews. One quibble: We have no idea how the 12 skaters related to one another on a personal level; we only see them separately trying to out-skate and out-talk one another. Sean Penn narrates. Columbia/Tristar's DVD comes with a commentary track, deleted scenes, and extra skating footage. read more...

        Matangi / Maya / M.I.A. (2018)

Like the Oscar-winning Amy Winehouse documentary Amy, Steve Loveridge's Matangi/Maya/M.I.A. contains tons of video footage of its subject, pop star M.I.A., from almost her entire life. So we see young Maya at art school, visiting her grandmother in Sri Lanka, and tapping out beats for what would become her first songs. Born the daughter of Arular Pragasam, the originator of the Tamil Tigers, she grew up with rebelliousness in her blood, and danger at her front door. Watching this film, it makes absolute sense that, in celebrity interviews, she would want to talk about genocide in her home country, rather than Hollywood gossip. Without wasting too much time, the movie details her meteoric rise to fame, and creating songs that actually meant something to her and came from her own experience, as well as her penchant for getting into trouble (mostly extending her middle finger during a Super Bowl performance and sending the world into a tizzy). It doesn't linger over any tragedies and always shows its spunky star bouncing back, ready for another round. The movie is probably already too far in her court to win over any new fans, but if you're an old fan, you'll thoroughly enjoy the blunt, brisk energy here. read more...
