    The Tuskegee Airmen (1995)

Produced for cable TV, The Tuskegee Airmen smacks of a low budget, cutting corners and skimming through history. The presence of a white director is also troublesome, perhaps revealing a kind of hesitance, or lack of trust, with the project. But nonetheless, director Robert Markowitz does the best he can with what he has, making excellent use of a strong cast, and using real war footage to help illustrate the flying and battle sequences (and save money on visual effects). read more...

Decades after the heyday of the Three Musketeers, the heroes have parted ways. Athos (John Malkovich) has raised a son, Raoul, to become a musketeer himself; Artemis (Jeremy Irons) is a priest, Porthos (Gerard Depardieu) passes the time womanizing and drinking; and their old pal D'Artagnan (Gabriel Byrne) serves the cruel, selfish young King Louis XIV (Leonardo DiCaprio), and is secretly in love with the queen (Anne Parillaud). read more...

        Hitchcock/Truffaut (2015)

If you're a lover of film and you own even a few film books, one of them is bound to be Francois Truffaut's extended interview with Alfred Hitchcock, first published in 1966, but updated throughout the years. Its major achievement was to elevate Hitch from a mere maker of entertainments to a Great Artist of the Cinema. Now the esteemed film critic and filmmaker (and new director of the New York Film Festival) Kent Jones brings the story of that book to the screen. It focuses less on the actual relationship between Truffaut and Hitchcock, however, than it does on Hitchcock's legacy. Jones has invited ten talented auteurs from France and the U.S.A. (and even Japan) to discuss Hitchcock's legacy and influence. (Peter Bogdanovich, in particular, knew the master of suspense and published his own interviews with him). read more...

          Jodorowsky's Dune (2014)

As a professional movie buff, I confess that, in general, it's much easier to get excited about documentaries about movies than it is to get excited about documentaries about, say, war or the climate crisis or the financial crisis or the food crisis. However, aside from Jodorowsky's Dune being spectacularly entertaining and intriguing, as well as flat-out surprising, it also contains wonderful themes, worth carrying into any aspect of life. read more...

            Get on Up (2014)

The biopic about James Brown was only inevitable, I suppose, though it's a good thing that Chadwick Boseman landed the role of the Godfather of Soul in Get on Up. He's magnificent, and effortlessly conveys an awesome performance energy throughout the movie. (Boseman also played Jackie Robinson in last year's underrated 42.) Like nearly any major Hollywood biopic it's this centerpiece performance that drives the movie. read more...
