Filming Othello (1978)

Apparently, Orson Welles suffered from financial troubles even on this simple essay film, shot mostly in and around his editing bay. He wanted to do something a bit more elaborate -- perhaps more like his previous film F for Fake -- but wound up with this interesting result instead. Welles spends 84 minutes talking about his great 1952 film Othello, how it came about, his thoughts on the play, reactions to the film, and lots of other stuff. He sometimes shows footage of the original film (without sound) under his narration. A highlight is a filmed dinner with himself, Micheal MacLiammoir (who played Iago) and Hilton Edwards (who played Brabantio). Welles concludes the dinner by explaining that they didn't run out of wine or things to say, but merely ran out of film. We also see footage of students asking questions after a screening of the original film. It's hard not to be moved by Welles' extraordinary storytelling or the slight wistful tone that creeps in; he explains that it's sad to talk about a film he's already made, but would much rather talk about the Othello he would yet make. "That Othello would be one hell of a picture," he says. Sadly, this was Welles' last completed, released film. He died in 1985. read more...

Mysterious Skin (2005)

Gregg Araki's remarkable new film Mysterious Skin has already received some negative press and a few reviews that have missed the point, but it's a superb achievement, and easily one of the two or three best films of the spring season. It traces the lives of two young men who were abused one summer as children by their baseball coach (Bill Sage). Neil (played as a youngster by Chase Ellison, and as a teen by Joseph Gordon-Levitt) becomes a rebel and a hustler, while the other, Brian (George Webster, and later Brady Corbet), withdraws and becomes fascinated by alien abductions. read more...

Fox and His Friends (1975)

Rainer Werner Fassbinder practically sweated films. Coming from the German New Wave of the 60s and 70s (which also included Werner Herzog and Wim Wenders), Fassbinder (1945-1982) poured out something like 40 films in his brief 37 years of life before he committed suicide in 1982 with a drug overdose. read more...

    Let There Be Light (1946)

Olive Films has released an essential Blu-ray, collecting all four of John Huston's wartime documentaries on one disc. These are: the relatively innocuous recruiting film Winning Your Wings (1942), featuring James Stewart; The Oscar-nominated Report from the Aleutians (1943), featuring (staged) battle footage, as well as footage of a bombing; San Pietro (1945), about a battle in a small village in Italy; and the powerful Let There Be Light (1946). That last one was an early example of how emotional stress in wartime can be just as incapacitating as physical injuries, but the military banned it, and it went unseen for decades. read more...
