The High and the Mighty (1954)

John Wayne's production company Batjac put together this early disaster movie with veteran action director William A. Wellman at the helm, and the result is a sharp, tense reading of a mushy script. Wayne is remarkable as an aging pilot with baggage (but not the kind you can check). Having flown in WWI and in countless other situations, he was responsible for a crackup that caused the death of his wife and child. Now his experience comes to the aid of a failing commercial flight limping from Hawaii to San Francisco. read more...

    Best Seller (1987)

Some crime films don't really attempt to be much more than an entertaining "B" movie, which is the case with Best Seller (1987). Brian Dennehy plays a big city cop who, after surviving an armed robbery of the police evidence room, publishes a best-selling crime novel. While struggling to write a follow-up, he's approached by the incredibly charming, snaky Cleve (James Woods). Cleve claims to have been a hired killer for a huge corporate bigwig, and offers to give Dennis all the dirt he needs for new book. Of course, this gets them into no end of trouble. read more...

    Joy (2015)

Just as they once abandoned their other awards-season, go-to directors John Madden and Lasse Hallstrom, the Weinsteins seem to have abandoned their latest prodigy, David O. Russell. After wringing tons of Oscar nominations and other awards out of Russell's previous, so-so movies Silver Linings Playbook and American Hustle, Russell's newest movie Joy -- which opened Christmas Day -- seems to be already evaporating from awards season like a stain on a polished kitchen floor. read more...

    The Mark of Zorro (1940)

Rouben Mamoulian's studio-era production of the famed adventure classic feels a bit rigid and talky compared to the more rambunctious Douglas Fairbanks version (1920) and the sexier Antonio Banderas version (1998). But with Tyrone Power in the lead, it still finds room for bright, playful fun and some elegant sword fighting. Kino Lorber issued it on Blu-ray in 2016. It comes with the same audio commentary track, by film critic Richard Schickel, and the same A&E "Biography" episode (Tyrone Power) that were featured on the 2003 disc. This disc also includes trailers. read more...

    Friday Foster (1975)

In 2015, Olive Films released two classic Pam Grier movies (Coffy and Foxy Brown) on Blu-ray, along with this more toned-down, more polished effort. Friday Foster was based on a groundbreaking newspaper comic strip about a black female fashion photographer. In this, Friday (Grier) is a photographer for a magazine. As the movie opens, she photographs an assassination attempt and becomes a target. She teams up with a private detective (Yaphet Kotto) to find out what's going on. read more...
