    Against the Sun (2015)

Released very close to Angelina Jolie's similar Unbroken, Against the Sun is a much lower-key film, more old-fashioned, and less graphically agonizing. This kind of material can be a physically grueling experience for viewers, and director Brian Falk carefully balances scenes of despair with scenes of hope. read more...

      3 Godfathers (1948)

John Ford and Christmas seems like a perfect combo, and yet the old master included Christmas themes in only two films, a scene of a Hawaiian Christmas in Donovan's Reef (1963), and 3 Godfathers (1948). The latter was based on a 1913 novel by Peter B. Kyne, which has been filmed many times (including the very good anime version Tokyo Godfathers). The story is a fairly obvious allegory for the Three Wise Men who journey to see the baby Jesus, but with Ford's poetic touch, a sentimental story turns into a very solid, color Western. read more...

        Goodbye Christopher Robin (2017)

Although Goodbye Christopher Robin is another awards-season biopic, this one manages to avoid most of the genre trappings by telling a more focused story, a story that's about something, rather than simply someone's "life story." (It's even somewhat kid-friendly.) The movie focuses on writer A.A. (Alan) Milne (Domhnall Gleeson), who comes home from The Great War full of trauma and anxiety. He wishes to write about the horrors of war, and decides to move to the quiet of the country with his wife Daphne (Margot Robbie) and their young son Christopher. He's unable to write for a while, and he broods while Daphne shops and sharply reproaches their nanny, Olive (Kelly Macdonald). Christopher, however (played by many different children at different ages), loves Olive dearly. read more...

        Sex, Lies, and Videotape (1989)

While still in his twenties, Steven Soderbergh wrote this screenplay, and made his feature directorial debut, quickly and cheaply, but with an impressive level of artistry. Sex, Lies, and Videotape (1989) — sometimes, for some reason, written out all in lowercase — won the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival, and when it opened in theaters (fairly close to Spike Lee's Do the Right Thing) it contributed to a general and growing excitement over independent film, and the bright future it promised. Nowadays, it's impossible to escape from the 1980s look of the film, and it doesn't feel as timeless as it once might have. read more...

          The Imitation Game (2014)

The moment I first heard about Morten Tyldum's The Imitation Game, it was connected with the word "Oscar." Of course, Alan Turing is an extraordinary historical figure, and he was most deserving of a good movie; an earlier feature film about this same material, Michael Apted's Enigma (2002), did not mention him. The Imitation Game is a fine, likable feature, but it feels polished and simplified, as if concerned with not pushing too far in any one direction. Could it have been made specifically for Oscar voters? read more...
