Africa Screams (1949)

This is one of the weaker Abbott and Costello comedies, but since it's in the public domain, I've had a copy in my collection for years, and I've always had a guilty laugh watching it. Playing Buzz Johnson and Stanley Livington, respectively, A&C con their way into joining an African safari; the hunters are secretly searching for diamonds, and they think that Lou has a map. Meanwhile, real-life hunters Frank Buck and Clyde Beatty do their stuff, and real-life boxer brothers Max and Buddy Baer play a couple of hired thugs. Additionally two of the Stooges, Shemp Howard and Joe Besser, provide comic support. The artificial jungle set -- including streams and ponds -- looks great, and I always imagine that the actors must have had a lot of fun running around on it. Plus, you can never have enough footage of guys in gorilla suits. Hillary Brooke stars as the girl that Lou thinks is in love with him. The director, Charles Barton, had previously helmed A&C's best film and biggest hit, Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein (1948). read more...

Ordinary World (2016)

Rocker Billie Joe Armstrong, from the band Green Day, trades in his day job for a lead acting role in a slightly charming, but thin and overly awkward comedy-drama of a musician's mid-life freak-out. As good as he may be on records, on stage, or in music videos, Armstrong doesn't have the skill to carry a lead role, even one as slight as this, although he does get by on his shabby appeal. read more...

The Lemon Drop Kid (1951)

I'm surprised this halfway decent Bob Hope movie hasn't become a Christmas classic. It's silly and fun, with just the right combination of big city-savvy and sentimental sweet. Hope plays an in-debt gambler -- very loosely based on a Damon Runyon character -- who must swindle a huge pile of cash during the holidays, so he sets up a fake old-folks home ("The Nellie Thursday Home For Old Dolls")! A range of delightful character actors either helps or hinders. Hope is pretty stressed throughout the movie, and it's a delightful break when "Silver Bells" comes on, showing Christmastime in the city at its best. Apparently co-writer Frank Tashlin directed a chunk of the movie without credit. Future Plan 9 from Outer Space star Tor Johnson appears as (not much of a stretch) a Swedish wrestler. read more...

Boundaries (2018)

Though blessed with outstanding performers, this indie/dramedy road movie never really sparks to life; it's a little too aware of its plot and character components and merely comes off as mechanical. read more...

The Boss (2016)

Melissa McCarthy is a comedy force to be reckoned with, and, one feels, someone perfect for our times. Yet it seems a little difficult to consistently focus her comedy chops throughout an entire feature film. Her work with Paul Feig is terrific — when she's at her best, she's empowered — but otherwise, she seems to fall prey to the wrong kind of lowbrow. The Boss is co-written and directed by her husband Ben Falcone. I did not see their previous collaboration, Tammy (2014), but judging by its general reception, and judging by The Boss, I'd guess that a spousal relationship and a working relationship are two different things. read more...
