Clambake (1967)

It's almost as if Elvis Presley were two guys. It's possible to enjoy his ferocious rock 'n' roll music of the 1950s on one level, and to enjoy the awfulness of the majority of his movies on another. His third movie of 1969, Clambake is indeed awful, but it's amusing and Presley's star power is hard to refute. It starts with Elvis, here as "Scott Hayward," driving through a blue screen, and then stopping at a gas station long enough to get caught up in one of those creaky old "switching places" sitcom plots. read more...

Blended (2014)

Blended at least shows that Adam Sandler, who has offered up some of the laziest comedies of recent years, is still thinking about his career. Ten years after 50 First Dates (2004) has teamed up for a third time with Drew Barrymore, co-star of one of his most beloved films, The Wedding Singer (1998). As if for good luck, Sandler has also reunited with Wedding Singer director Frank Coraci (also of The Waterboy and Click). Sadly, the comparisons stop there. Sandler has once again used moviemaking to provide himself a paycheck and a vacation simultaneously; this time he brings his friends to a colorful African tourist resort, complete with amorous hippos. read more...

Elizabethtown (2005)

When Cameron Crowe was a young rock journalist, he probably had a good editor who helped shape his copy. Even when he wrote his first screenplay, Fast Times at Ridgemont High (1982, based on his own book), there was a director, Amy Heckerling, who translated it into a good movie. read more...

Crazy Rich Asians (2018)

The first Hollywood film in decades to incorporate an all-Asian cast, the romantic comedy Crazy Rich Asians spoke to audiences in a big way, and became a huge hit. It's very conventional, but also quite charming, often funny, and lovely to look at, both in the beautiful cast and in the gorgeous, opulent sets and locations. The plot has Rachel Chu (Constance Wu) heading to Singapore with her boyfriend Nick (Henry Golding) for a wedding; the catch is that she has no idea he's super-rich and will have to deal with his traditional, inflexible family. Michelle Yeoh, Awkwafina, and Ken Jeong are among the huge cast. Jon M. Chu directed, from a novel by Kevin Kwan. read more...

Aloha (2015)

Cameron Crowe's Aloha was the subject of some bad pre-release buzz and was screened for the press under some very strict guidelines, and now it seems as if critics are descending upon it with venom that has been building for some time. It can be fun to watch the mighty fall; Crowe was once a hit-maker who refreshed tired genres and won an Oscar along the way. But he made some bad choices, including the remake Vanilla Sky and the expensive, ill-conceived flop Elizabethtown. Aloha has a weird plot, but the funny characters and their romantic interactions make the movie worth seeing. Not to mention that some wise editor cut it down to a slick 1 hour and 45 minutes, much shorter than some of Crowe's recent attempts. At heart, it's just a romantic comedy, slightly above average in this stagnant genre. read more...
